So, lo and I are at my parents house. I didn't bring the pack n play because mom said they had a crib and told me it was not drop side. Guess what?
So, lo is not moving yet. When she goes down, she stays in the same place all night. Am I safe to use it this time since it appears all drop side injuries occurred from babies rolling over to the sides, getting stuck, suffocating, etc? I have asked her to get a pack n play for our next visit and she said she would.

At the time, I would have freaked and insisted on a pack and play. I was irrational a year ago and there was no talking me down from the ledge.
Now, I realize it probably would have been fine for a few days. When I got home, I'd order and ship a pack and play.

since she's still little, can you just drop the mattress to the lowest level and then leave the side down? that was she has enough of the rail to keep her from rolling out, but the rail couldn't accidentally drop and injure her.

@mrs. bird: I like this idea. But also, are there any stores near you where you could run out and buy a PnP, like Target, Walmart, Babies R Us?

@mediagirl: we have a drop side crib. Its actually pretty old. But seems secure.

I have a friend who purposely uses a drop side crib because she is so short. Your baby is safe, but I can also understand wanting to have a safe place for the LO to sleep.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: in the US, it's illegal to sell a dropside crib, you can't even donate them or sell them secondhand. there were a number of children that were hurt/killed when the dropside accidentally dropped. i wish manufacturers had just not made crappy ones and ruined them for everyone, because they're so much easier!

@mrs. bird: wow! i had no clue. I googled quickly and though they aren`t illegal they aren't recommended. The one I have is actually had to drop down and with a bumper its even harder. haha bumper + drop down ... clearly no-nos

It probably is fine but I wouldbe too paranoid to put my baby in there. I would rather let her sleep in her car seat or buy a cheap sleeper or pack n play from a nearby target or walmart.

If your baby is still really little I would just deal with it for a few days. We got a drop side crib second hand that I used a few times while LO was really little. Then we had a carpenter remove that side and re-do it so that now it's fixed.

We have a drop side crib and do what mrs. Bird recommended for now. We will convert it to a fixed side when he gets a little bigger (baby is 2.5 months right now). You should be fine for now, but certainly do follow your instincts and preference-- im sure you don't want to be up all night worrying about your baby:). Hope it works out!

I think it's a good idea to drop the rail just in case. However, knowing my paranoid self, I would just buy a pack n play.

You can always rig it with a zip tie so that it can't go down even if it came loose by accident. Or drop the side down and then zip tie it so it doesn't move. That's what I would do in the mean time until you get another pack n play.
