Most of my friends/family are very much anti-gun. Although I do have "facebook friends" who are pro-gun these are not people who are in my daily life.

Regardless of what people's feelings are toward hunting and hand gun for "protection" (what a crock of sh*t) NO ONE needs automatic or semi-automatic military grade assault weapons.

I have a lot of hunters in my family, but thankfully none of them have said anything pro-guns/NRA during this, at least not publicly on FB.

Both sides of our family (mine and dh) are extremely pro gun/over my dead body will you regulate types. It is infuriating. My dad takes pride in his ARs and shows them off. I hate it so much.

I have lots of family on DH's side that have posted things about "this is why you should conceal carry" "every person should have a gun" whatnot. It just makes me so upset. Letting everyone arm themselves hasn't really been working out that great. How is that even a valid response to the call for more gun control legislature anymore? How about we try something new, like banning assault weapons, prohibiting people on an FBI watch list from buying weapons, and not allowing second hand sales without a background check. These seem like common sense measures. Would these measures prevent every bad person from getting a gun? No, but it would prevents some. It would be something, whereas now we have nothing.

I think part of the reason why nothing gets done is because the size of the problem. There are too many things to consider and instead of trying to at least solve for the low hanging fruit, people get all frustrated and do nothing.

I'm against having a gun in my home (DH says he wants to get one... Yeah, probably not going to happen.). I do think there are responsible gun owners out there so I understand their right to protect themselves and for hunting and even paintballing. As for assault rifles... No, no civilian should own one or have access of getting one. Sure, military can I guess have them. As for civilians, they can have their hand guns and rifles.

I do understand that if someone really wanted an assault weapon that they probably could smuggle one in but it should not be legal to own one.

I did hear this Orlando shooter was on the FBI list twice but his case was closed both times. I'm not sure why they closed his case given what has happened. I do hope they are trying to figure out how this was missed.

Does anyone know what "gun control" means? I honestly don't really know what it entails so I'm not for or against it. But I am a responsible gun owner and I'd like to keep my ability to have any guns I want. But why in the world was a guy who was flagged by the FBI a few years ago for having terrorist tendencies, or whatever, able to buy a gun 12 days ago? Even more generally... why was a guy who was flagged by the FBI a few years ago able to stay in this country as a free citizen walking around amongst us? I'm totally more concerned with dealing with the actual criminals than I am with taking away guns from normal people like me and my husband.

@looch: totally agree with you here. The problem just seems so large and we can't agree on what to do and we do nothing as a result. It's the same problem with immigration, both legal immigration (which both R&D generally agree upon) and illegal. I would love to see a series of small steps to begin with.

@lilyann: Oh thanks!! I just watched 37 seconds of it and will watch it all when I get home. But no matter what Obama says, I want to keep my gun with me always! And I'm so curious what he will say about Chicago, which really does have the strictest gun laws. Thanks again for sending that!!

@bluestriped bee: I donno but with freedom of speech you can say you hate whatever group. His work environment seemed absolutely toxic with many people hating different factions. So far I haven't seen anything that he ever told anyone he planned anything or indicated he planned to act on his hate, there's even gay and trans people who knew him years ago and said he was cool with them and seemed like a friend.

@agold: I donno, there hasn't been any evidence given that he's affiliated with any terrorist organization or that he ever indicated any action. maybe there should be levels of watching, so the assault weapon purchase should have sounded alarms. But the nra has blocked the ability of that type of restriction because they think there's too many easy reasons that the govt could give for restricting gun purchases.

@Maysprout: That is so true. I do think that a "no gun" list could be abused. Just like the "no fly" list has been abused. But something should be done. As for this guy's terrorist ties. I thought he did call the police during his standoff and claim allegiance to ISIS and that also ISIS is claiming "credit" for the attack. He was also investigated because he had made some kind of ISIS sympathy type comments to his coworkers. That's all enough for me to get him on a list of some sort.

I've seen comments saying the shooter should have been continued to be watched, even after he did nothing wrong. I've seen comments from people saying that they will never give up their guns.

Why is constitutional amendment #2 so important to people, but #4 isn't?

I don't own any guns, but do support the right to bear arms. I really don't know what the right answer is. While I do think no body should own an assault rifle, there is no need, it can be just as easy to get the same effect using double finger trigger pulls on some non-automatic weapons. I am more in favor of harsher security checks.

@sunny: Agreed. They investigated him and concluded there was no reason to continue watching him. End of story.

This is why I love Obama's response about this subject. I am shocked (and appalled) that the CDC isn't even allowed to STUDY this subject. How are we supposed to really understand what the problem is and what solutions might help if we can't even study it??

And since we can't study it, I can't make a very educated opinion about this topic. But it seems to me that maybe semi-automatic guns that use magazines might be part of the problem and perhaps civilians don't need those types of weapons?

@Adira: You are right. So many times the news calls guns "assault rifles" but they aren't really.

@sunny: But don't you think that expressing ISIS sympathies to your coworkers is something wrong? If my coworker was an ISIS sympathizer, I'd freak the f out.

@Adira: The AR 15 weapon was reportedly obtained legally.

That does make me wonder if they did ban assault weapons, would gun manufacturers develop new guns to fire like an assault weapon but not be an assault weapon. Hmmm....
