Have you or your child donated hair? How many inches was the chop? Did you regrow or keep shorter? How long to regrow?

I donated my hair when I was a teen, it was at least a foot, maybe more. I just cut off about 8"+ this weekend that I plan to donate, I just have to look up the paperwork! I've heard Pantene has the best program and I know they had shorter lengths allowed. As a teen I did locks of love but I haven't heard great things recently. I have super thick hair so I hope it'll help someone! I went with a short bob and loooooove it.

@MenagerieMama: I've been referred to Pantene as well and told to avoid Locks of Love.
My girl (5) decided she's ready for a chop. Her hair presently extends to her bottom and she's asking for a shoulder/chin length bob. She'll easily have 16 inches to donate, possibly more.
We've been talking about donating her hair to another girl. That's my only turn off to Pantene, it's for woman. Don't get me wrong, I think what they do is amazing. I'd just like to go with a kids organization since my girl has made the connection to donating to another girl.

I cut off around 10-12 inches a few years ago. I donated to wigs for kids. They are a non-profit that makes and gives wigs to kids with cancer (and other diseases?) free. They take and sell shorter hairs, with the proceeds going to making the wigs. I think they need around 10 inches to make wigs.
I haven't grown my hair out to this length again. I cut it just below my ears, and have kept it shoulder length since.

@auggiefrog: Wigs for Kids is one of the organizations I was considering for my girl, since they are kid specific in their wig creation.

I've done it four times. Every three years or so I'll cut off 14 inches or so and send it to Pantene.

Six year ago, my husband had longish hair and after one too many comments to cut it (from co-workers and relatives) decided to grow it out even longer to donate.
We chose 'Wigs for Kids' since they are local to us and have a great reputation.
He ended up donating 22"!
He's kept is short ever since.

You all made me want to send my hair to Wigs for Kids now but the minimum donation is 12" and I'm pretty sure I don't have more than 10". Boo. @Jadj13: @auggiefrog:

@MenagerieMama: I think I'm going to use Children with Hair Loss - they require 8 inches and are a children centric organization. And as best as I've been able to tell with the research I've done so far, they don't charge the recipients at all.
I also was bummed when I saw that Wigs for Kids needed 12 inches. I think we'll make it, if LO sticks to her guns about how much she wants chopped.

I've donated around 5 times, over the years. Most places want at least 10 inches, but I believe Pantene will do 8. I donated to Locks of Love in the begining, but quit because they have a horrible track record of providing wigs. I have used Wigs for Kids more recently, and they have a better track record. However, even with a better company like Wigs for Kids, most hair donations are not able to be used to make wigs. Most are sold and the profits are (theoretically) used to buy wigs. Also, they don't go to kids with cancer. Because kids with cancer will grow their hair back after the stop chemo (hopefully). Most of the wigs go to kids that have permanent hair loss from alopecia or burns or things like that. I still think it can be a great experience for your little, but people often don't realize all of this.
