No (thank heavens!). I'm a total wuss in the heat.

Yes. Summer of 2005, in New Orleans. It wasn't that the AC was broken, it was just so blisteringly hot (and humid!) outside that the AC couldn't keep up (it was an older unit in an older apartment). I worked nights, and when I got home in the morning would take a cold shower and go to sleep naked with the ceiling fan on. I still woke up gross and sweaty but it cooled me off enough to fall asleep (and I was usually exhausted enough to stay asleep).

Yes. It wasn't truly broken, but the unit is older and had a hard time keeping up last summer. It would run all day if I didn't set the thermostat ridiculously high. We kept the blinds closed and the fans on.

Yep. In August. In Arizona. 110 degrees out. I went to a friends house.

Our whole area lost power two weekends in a row last summer during record-breaking heat. It was awful.

Ugh yes. Last summer right after we moved in. August in Central CA is unbearable as it is. At 7 months pregnant without AC the temperatures of 105+ were pretty miserable.

No, but I did live in a place without A/C overseas, and the running WATER went out (for five days!) during a heat wave. Like, 122 degrees kind of a heat wave. That sucked.

We hauled water from the river and put it into barrels and sat in them. My little sister sat in her barrel with a snorkel, completely submerged, because she said her head got too hot otherwise, lol. She was about 9.

Yup, it was 100 degrees and my baby would not sleep because it was too hot and we were not able to swaddle her in that heat. We still talk about that. It was a traumatic night. But only one night. Lol.

No but I used to live on the 5th floor of a walk up in NYC and didn't have an AC for the first year or so. Windows open and ceiling fan on high was usually enough (we had a window unit in the living room but not the bedrooms). I was also in the same apartment during the big black out in NYC in 2003-- that was f-ing hot, especially after people walked miles and miles to get home. My kind of overweight and out of shape dad walked down and stayed with us, since he couldn't get home to NJ, and man could he have used some AC.

I still prefer opening windows to using AC though, and in New England, there are really only maybe 2 months where I really need it (but, I *really* need it those two months!).

nope, but it doesn't get as crazy hot here as it does in many of the places you guys live. we live on the top floor of a building with a flat black roof & it gets reeeeallly hot for a couple months & i turn it on so i can sleep & so our cat doesn't bake during the day. we have ceiling fans that we try to use when it's not as hot & i like fresh air.

Yes! Last summer while I was pregnant! It was horrible. And our summers are HOT. 100+ degrees everyday. Luckily we got someone in to fix it right away.

Last year, we were affected by the derecho that came across the country. It was MISERABLE hot, and we didn't have electricity for three days. Not much you can do there...the whole city was out, so there really wasn't anywhere to go. We knew people without electricity for 9+ days during heat waves of 100+ degrees. Some people had generators, but lots didn't. There were cooling stations everywhere. I think we were blessed that no one died, because many seriously could have!
