Yep, I parked near some frat houses during finals week...I missed the temporary no parking signs for movie filming.

Well techincally yes. But it was in an accident and needed to be towed to a body shop. It's never been towed as punishment for illegal parking.

Yes, for unpaid parking tickets ... damn you campus parking! I thought my car was stolen and called the police. Nope... just towed.

ugh yes for street cleaning while I was living in Jamaica Plains, Ma. Worst thing was it was my dads old beat up truck and I was so scared it had been stolen I called him crying. He calmed me down and told me to read the signs..well whattaya know!

Not for anything illegal, just for breakdowns.
In fact I just had my husband's car towed to the shop about 10 minutes ago since it's not working.

Only once while I was vacationing in Scotland with 3 of my friends. We didn't know that we parked in a handicap spot. The sign was super tiny. We actually watched as this big claw thing picked up our rental and put it on the truck. We tried to plead with the cop that we were just ignorant Americans but he wasn't buying it. A cabbie saw the whole thing happen and waited for us. We actually got in and were able to say "follow that car!" Looking back, it was quite a hilarious situation. But boy was it costly.

Yes. It was in college, a friend called to say that they were about to tow it. So I ran out there, and the guy was a total jerk. He said that since he started the work, even though the car wasn' on the truck, he had to finish it and I couldn't move. Then made me open the car and take off the emergency break (I always pull it up). So I followed my car to the impound load in a friend's car. I got my money back from the city because I also had my boss write a letter saying the no parking signs weren't up for 24 hours like they were supposed to be, giving notice. I had just parked there the night before.

I parked at a church once before a school event and it started snowing, so I walked home instead of driving. I went to get it the next AM and it was ON the tow truck. Somehow........ I managed to talk it off the truck!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea how and it was one of my finer moments.

My friend's car was when he came to visit me in Boston. He ended up having to pay almost $150 bucks to get his car back. I felt awful and tried to pay it since it was my fault, but he wouldn't let me. Thankfully we were able to laugh about it.

@LindsayInNY: same here! thank goodness we didn't own a car in NYC. we are in Boston now and have been towed for forgetting street cleaning more times than I would like to admit. total pain and expensive!

My brother borrowed my car and parked it in a tow zone. On my way to pick up my car, my other brother was driving me to the tow lot and we got rear-ended by a bus. My back has never been the same!

Yes, from my boyfriend's apartment complex in college. It drove me nuts, they had certain spots, but they were full, so I just parked in an open spot...and my car was gone.

Only for breakdowns. There have been a few times where I had a note on it threatening to tow it though.

No, I'm super careful when it comes to reading street parking signs!

Yes, twice. Once when I was living in Brooklyn (that was an experience-- I waited for over 2 hours at the tow yard, and realized I forgot my credit card at my apartment. I had to go home and do it all over again the next day), and once when I was in college and parked at a friend's apartment.

Yes. Oh the joys of living in cities with street sweeping parking restrictions and snow removal parking bans that are not clearly marked.

Only after a car accident. Not a fun experience but at least my auto insurance picked up the whole tab.

@bhbee: yes!! Street cleaning.. So hard to remember!
And for being parked on a major artery during a snow emergency... Didn't know it was a snow emergency until my car was gone..
