I haven't had this happen to me yet but I fear it may today, eek! Our car displays how many miles you have left before the tank is empty, but I guess once you hit a certain level, it just says 'low fuel' and the remaining mileage goes away. I kept meaning to go to costco to fill up but had to run little errands here and there over the past week, and now I'm scared I won't be able to even get to a gas station in the city (where gas is at least $0.40 more). Yikessss!

Once right after college I was taking my girlfriends back to the sorority house after a bar (I had sobered up). It was around 3:00am, I didn't have shoes, my phone or my wallet, thinking it would just be a quick trip. My car stopped near the apartments by campus and I had some friends who still lived there and one of them walked to the gas station with me and bought me gas.

I'm terrified of this happening. It almost happened to us on the Penna Turnpike because gas stations are so few and far between. I'm pretty anal about getting gas when it gets to 1/8 of a tank, sooner if I know I'm going to be on the highway, and my husband is a bit more cavalier about it.

No but the light has come on more times than I'd like to admit. Freaks out my DH when I do that!

@jhd: Yes, especially because there's no noise associated with it! My last car beeped at me if the fuel level got below 1/8 tank...now I watch it like a hawk.

Ugh, thankfully no! I'm always suuuper paranoid about it happening so I like to fill up before the "low fuel" light can even come on! DH on the other hand likes to live on the edge... Not cool.

Nope. I played it safe in the beginning, then always push it to the limit though. I noted how far I've gone and how much gas I actually fill up. For my old car, I learned that I go a solid 125 miles even after the light came on. With our new car, it tells me the range, and it's pretty accurate so I never let that go under 50, though to some, that's cutting it close. My mom likes to fill up once it's at a quarter tank.

It has not happened to me but I have definitely had the light go on. I am better about keeping my gas tank filled, but DH will risk it. It has happened to him before.

Yes, it happened to me, I was lazy about refilling that car and was on my way home from work..thank goodness it stalled out before I got on the main road because I would have gotten on the high way and that would have been ugly.
eta: I was in college at the time.

No, and I don't fill until the gas light is on. Sometimes after it's been on for a while...

Once with a friend. He insisted he knew how far we could get on what was in the tank and he was wrong. We were literally in the middle of nowhere in Wales at maybe 2am... we had to walk about five miles to a gas station, and then we walked all the way back to the car only to realize we had left the gas cannister at the gas station. So we had to make the walk again. I had some serious blisters. And I'm pretty sure he didn't ever do that again.

It hasn't happened to me but DH ran out of gas a few years ago. He was too confident in his ability to guess how many miles he had left past empty, and the car wouldn't start for him to leave his work parking lot. Luckily there was a gas station half a mile away.
When my car reaches 0 miles remaining, I usually have another 50 miles before it really runs out of gas.

One time when I was 13/14, my mom decided not to fill up at the last gas station before we left the city. I think the line was long or the price was higher. She proceeded to coast down all the hills in an attempt to make it to the next gas station without running out. She made it, but I think I've been traumatized. If that light comes on my car, the gas station is always the next place I go.

Nope, I'm paranoid and will fill up as soon as it gets down to 1 bar. I also have a hybrid, so I could probably make it a lot longer to the next refill. We've gotten close a few times when we road trip and DH is driving.
A friend moved across the country and her dad was driving her Prius across the country for her. He didn't realize it need gas (I guess he thought it was completely electric) and broke down on the highway.
