For routine well-checks?
DS1 is 3 and he has not... (aside from the nb screen heel prick) it's not common practice at our pedi unless there is concern or reason.
DS2 was jaundice and has his heels poked the first 8 days of his life.

Yup, both have many times for jaundice, iron/lead tests, and allergies.

Our state requires a blood draw/test for lead at 12 months. So, yes to the title (has had blood drawn), no to the content (not at a well-visit)

Yes they did a lead test at 1 and 2 but thankfully not this year!

Yes within hours of birth for some tests. I felt so bad for her!! I don't think she's had any since then.

@Bao: that's so funny that even in our state there are differences!

Yes. DS1 they tested iron and lead level routinely at a year. He also had peanut allergy test at age 2.
DS2 had lead levels checked at 12m because even though not standard practice at our current pediatrician, we lived in an old house

yes, they do it yearly here for iron and lead til age 3, full arm draw. I skipped DD1's 2nd year appt though. I have to take both girls in a couple weeks

Yes at 1 year for lead and hemoglobin/iron levels. His iron was low at the first check so had to re-draw a month later and luckily passed the 2nd one!
*It took almost a full minute each time to fill a vial from his arm. Poor little guy!

Yes, at 2 he had one to check his iron levels. Our ped said it had just become a new standard that usually happens at age 1. He had to have another iron check at age 3 to make sure his iron levels were back up (they were low at 2 years old).
He did great both times! I was shocked that he actually sat still. At 2 years old he didn't cry but he did at 3 once they were all done.

Not for regular well checks, but they both had heel pricks for jaundice in their first week. DD also had a health scare around 4 months and had to have blood taken several times in a weekend. It was a little traumatic for both of us because the first time the phlebotomist was awful and couldn't get in her veins. The next couple times she had blood work they were vey quick and efficient, but she was scared to death because of what happened the first time!

LO1 had to have a blood draw for allergy testing at 16 months.
LO2 had to have multiple heel pricks for jaundice.

Routine test for anemia and lead at 9 months old, maybe we got an earlier one because our house is old? She also tested him, using the same blood draw, for a genetic condition (whose name I forget) which causes favism (allergy to fava beans), because I have s family history of it and it occurs commonly in those with Mediterranean/Mid-Eastern descent. He didn't have it!

Yes, at 9 months, 1 year, and 2 year well visits, to check for iron and lead.
@MoonMoon: here (in MA) you can do the first one at 9m or 1 year. I had them do it at 9 m since there are no shots at that visit, but her iron was a little low and they had to do it again at 1 year anyway.
It sucks. I don't know if our phlebotomists are bad or I'm a wuss but I hate it. We don't have to do it again though.

@Foodnerd81: it was really horrible! So much worse than a vaccine jab. Poor babies. I'm glad it's behind us.

Nope for my first two, but my third was hypoglycemic at birth and gave a lot of blood.

Both boys had many foot pricks as newborns because they both were jaundice. Both have had full blown blood draws to check lead and iron levels. My DS1 had his blood drawn twice after one to check his thyroid too. I hated it every time.

Recently at his 1 year and we felt like refusing it as he was about to get poked but thank goodness we checked since it was elevated! I have a recent thread about it. He ended up getting 5 shots and the lab draw, I was more traumatized than he was! They also wanted to do a skin test for tb since we traveled recently to South America. We skipped that one for now!

DD and DS have both had their blood drawn at their 1-year well baby visit.

Both boys at one for lead. E has his 2 year well child coming up and I am not sure what to expect because we live somewhere new.

The 3 full blood draws he's had were not related to well-checks. I didn't realize that was a thing. Most of my friends' children have never had a blood draw.
apricot / 324 posts
Not other than a heel/finger prick. I absolutely dread the day he needs a full draw. I can't imagine how to make him stay still.

Yes. It's standard, in Portland, to have lead levels checked at 1 year. We went ahead and checked her iron then too. We're rechecking iron, b12, and vit d at 2 years old.
eggplant / 11408 posts
She had a finger pick for lead levels at her 18 mo. appointment, along with all the newborn things. She did have to get two blood draws for illness, though-one at urgent care, and a follow up 3 days later in a lab. She was quiet, but she didn't cry at all. I was so proud of her!

we've never had them at the pediatrician, but routine for us with his specialist (on basically the same schedule as the pediatrician) and it is effing miserable. It's the most tramatic and awful experience ever and it ruins our day every time. C is almost 22 months
honeydew / 7917 posts
Routine at 1 year to test for iron and lead. They also get it done yearly to test their food allergies.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
DS did at the hospital quite a few times after birth (poor kid), then they pricked him to test for iron deficiency and something else. But that happened before he was 1. He's 2.5 now and no draws since then!
