There was just a recent article in the Times about how Facebook is complicating family estrangements:
I've been estranged from family members, and the article made me grateful that I'm not on Facebook or social media. Although if anyone wants the skinny on what I'm up to these days, Hellobee paints a pretty full picture of my family life!

Yeah, the same goes for ex's or friends that you defriended. They can still pop up on your newsfeed through someone else and then you have to be reminded of them again. Down with FB, hehe.

Not with family members but I've been estranged from friends and defriended and have been defriended by people. It's awkward and stupid but I can't waste my time on people who don't make positive impacts on my life.

We are estranged from one of my BILs. He deleted us from FB.

We've been estranged from my mom's dad for pretty much my whole life. My grandparents divorced after 30+ years of marriage when my mom was pregnant with me, and it wasn't a pretty divorce. My mom was always very close with her mom, so we've never had a relationship at all with her dad. The few times we have seen him, he has gotten my name wrong...and I don't think he would have ever recognized me if we ran into each other on the street.
My mom has 3 older brothers, and their families retained a relationship with him...it has always been very awkward. Over the past year or so, there has definitely been resentment from them towards our family. It makes me sad...I wasn't there when all of this happened and I've always felt like the decisions were made before I had any idea what was going on.

I'm estranged from the relatives on my mom's side. They are some of the most negative people I know and I am done with them.

I recently Defriended a cousin and it has complicated things for sure! But we were never close to begin with. This is why I want to delete my facebook.

Sort of but didn't involve social media. My MIL found out she had breast cancer the weekend DH and I got engaged. Rather than telling us about what was going on, her and my FIL just stopped communicating with us at all without giving us any indication of why (we actually thought they were unhappy with the engagement). FIL told DH's brother what was going on and BIL accidentally spilled the beans to DH but then we were more upset because FIL/MIL didn't tell us about it directly. They finally told us after MIL had had a mastectomy and was declared cancer free. The relationship remained strained thereafter until MIL passed away from other forms of cancer about 6 months after our wedding.

@Rubies: this is exactly why I never joined Facebook and still haven't. Just bc we were once friends does not mean I am obligated to stay friends with you if are a selfish, two-faced drama queen. I think it would be too weird to reject a friend request so I just avoid all social media

I have a toxic cousin that I try to avoid and don't speak to anymore. I guess it's not really being estranged since I'll still see her at some family functions - but I do go out of my way to avoid her and I dread being in the same room.

We don't talk with my sister, but it's not an issue for me, since I'm not on any social media sites (and nobody in the family knows me here or on WB!). It was very awkward for my husband, though, when we had our falling out because he and my sister are friends on Facebook. She ended up deleting him, which was honestly a bit of relief since he didn't want to keep her as a friend, but he also didn't want to delete her and start more drama.
