Have you ever found something online that made a liar out of someone you know?

I've definitely dealt with liars, but it wasn't a online/IRL thing... just people lying or spreading false gossip IRL lol.

Minor stuff, yes. Like where someone said they would be vs. where they actually were. Like that.
Nothing really exciting!

Yep. I discovered someone who lied about her first and last name.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I know a guy that hid the fact that he had a kid from his gf but I have never heard of a guy that said he was a dad and wasn't. Well, besides Rob Kardashian...

In high school, a girl said she was pregnant, and then, suddenly, said she had her baby one weekend. I was like "um, no, I saw you at Walmart that day."

Not online but one of my housemates at uni lied her ass off about so many things big and serious things, from rape and illness to handing in work that wasn't her own. We were so shocked when we realized.

I'd love to hear the story!
Nothing major on my end. I had a friend in HS that made up a ton of crazy stories, but we eventually caught on and learned to not believe them. Then a good friend's BF told her 3 years into their relationship that he has a daughter. They worked it out and are now happily married though.

Oh, yes. I used to be a member of a now-defunct internet community and there was one girl there who we were all pretty friendly with who turned out to be a complete liar.
It was pretty easy to prove her wrong. She claimed that she was a music journalist who interviewed a lot of celebs and had been published in a lot of major magazines and websites, but nobody ever found anything written under her name. And she claimed to be married to a musician who was pretty well-known in indie circles at the time, and a quick Google search revealed that he wasn't married.

If ex boyfriends count then absolutely! It's such a sickening feeling.

No...but I always try to be careful on the internet--I feel like you can't trust anyone these days!

Not me, but my an ex found out that his gf was married, had two children, and didn't have cancer.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@oliviaoblivia: wow! Why would you lie about having cancer? That's so sad.
pineapple / 12793 posts
@littlek: he was moving for grad school and had asked her to go with him. She told him she couldn't because she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Went so far as to go head scarf shopping with his mom who is a breast cancer survivor. Major sicko.

It's not a *good* story . . . it's finding out that many of the things that someone has shared online are just not true . . . from their name, to details about how/where they grew up, etc.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@littlek: ugh. I think it happens more than anyone would like. There was a case in my city about some dude asking for donations and he raised quite a bit of money before anyone found out he didn't have cancer.

@lawbee11: @MsLipGloss: I understand wanting to be anonymous online, but I don't understand creating a fake name and identity.
pineapple / 12526 posts
Yes... I'll just say this... I used to be a military wife. A lot of people take advantage of the charities, etc that are available to military families. And a LOT of women target military men online.

@littlek: @simplyfelicity: I suspected something big happened in his life marriage or a kid and found a Babys R Us registry. He denied he had a baby. Then I found pictures. The baby was gorgeous and looked just like him. He finally admitted he was a father.

@Leialou: @lawbee11: That's what I don't understand. Why lie? Some things appear to be true . . . but at the end of the day, when the lie begins with who someone is, how can you trust much of anything else that has been shared?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Leialou: ditto. What is the point?
I have always wondered how much to people lie on here verses telling the truth. I don't see the point in lying.

Someone close to me lies about her age and makes up names on social media. I think it's so dumb, but she says she has her reasons..
honeydew / 7589 posts
Yeah, a few times.
How I feel about it depends on the situation. Making up a child, or faking an illness, or some other story that hurts people or is for personal gain? Not okay. I would cut off contact.
But as far as using a fake name? I do that, on public social media. It's to protect my privacy and keep people like employers from finding me online and reading my personal info that I don't want them to see. I think it's fairly common to use fake names in social media for privacy reasons. When I get to know online friends really well, then I'm comfortable sharing my personal info. But not just every person on the internet.

Haha, people do it on this site, why are we so shocked by it? I would be willing to bet there are more people who aren't what they seem!

I dated a guy once who led me to believe he was 10 years younger than he actually was. I saw his license once and was totally grossed out (he was 40. I was like 24) and immediately broke up with him.
to make it even more creepy, he continued to send me gifts. Like $125 starbucks giftcards. I treated all my friends...until it kept being creepy and he kept sending them.
honeydew / 7687 posts
I haven't been in that scenario - but maybe it was/is for safety reasons. I guess I wouldn't assume that it was maliciously motivated.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I dated a total liar but he was not really online or on FB or anything so I never really knew the truth!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yep. And it's the internet. Catfishing anyone? Happens all the time. I dont have energy to care nor do I have energy to be one ofthose ppl who lies. If you're worried about security or identity theft. Dont use your name. Hell, dont use the internet for interacting w ppl!
