How did it work out? LO and I are flying next weekend and I'm debating whether to check our car seat or just get one with the rental car. It would be awesome not to have to worry about lugging the car seat in the airport, then checking it and claiming it later, but I'm also a little concerned the rental one will be gross.

Yes. It was gross.
And a very very basic model. After spoiling ourselves with Britax carseats I didn't feel good about putting my kids in the rental carseats.

Yes; twice (or 3 times? I can't remember). They have never been gross; they have always been totally clean (both the seat and all straps).
We only rent from National; so I can't speak to other car rental companies.

yes - it was gross and sooo old looking
The next time I flew I bought a Cosco Scenera and use that as a travel seat now (light weight and inexpensive)

I did when traveling with my god daughter years ago and learned my lesson. The first one they tried to give us was expired and then second one was really dirty.
We bought a cheap seat for travel. It ended up being cheaper than the rental fee for a week and I know it's safe. -
