All of these travel posts have me thinking, have you ever vacationed over Christmas in a place where you weren't celebrating the holidays with family (other than your own SO/LOs)? Possibly to a non-Christmas celebrating place? Where did you go?

I went to St. Thomas with my parents and step-siblngs over Christmas break. We went to a little church on Christmas Eve, woke up Christmas morning, and flew back home later that day. The Christmas Eve service was awesome - they played Christmas music on steel drums! And waking up Christmas morning to a pina colada was kiiiind of the greatest thing ever.

@littlebug: The idea of spending the Christmas holiday on a beach is extremely appealing! I've only ever been in cold weather climates for the holidays.

Dh's family is scattered and we are too many people to fit in his mom's townhouse at this point, so when we do his side for Christmas we have been going to more of a vacation destination. One year we went to Palm Springs, and another we did Scottsdale. Basically places that will be warmer than boston or San Francisco (where his mom lives) and where they can golf at Christmas time.
But we still stay in a rental house all together so it's like a family vacation in that sense- right down to the brothers bickering and their mom getting fed up.

I've done a lot of travelling *around* Christmas, but the only time I've spent Christmas Day away from my hometown was during a trip to London - it was sad to be away from my family, but still lots of fun!

I've always wanted to do this. It would be wonderful! Somewhere tropical ... white sand beaches ... warm ...

This was a while ago but my family went to Europe over Christmas, it was amazing!

I have a friend who does this with her parents every year (she's an only child but her husband goes as well) and I'm always so jealous! They usually go someplace warm like Mexico, Caribbean, Bahamas, etc.

When my parents were building their house a few years ago we skipped Christmas and went on a cruise. It was lovely and so much fun - not something I'd want to do with kids but as grown adults

We left on Christmas Day for our honeymoon in Jamaica. Flights were cheaper and the airports were much less travelled. We spent the couple of days beforehand with family, though.

We used to travel to Mexico every year at Christmas and stayed at the Excellence Playa Mujeres. Man, it is amazing.

We went to Anguilla one year with my in-laws! It was a TON of fun! We even decorated a palm tree with homemade decorations. It was so much fun, but definitely didn't FEEL like Christmas.

Last year we skipped Christmas! We took 2 week trip of Southeast Asia as our last big trip before TTC. We left the morning of Christmas Eve and landed in Hanoi, Vietnam at 10pm on Christmas Day. It's been our favorite vacation so far!

We have flown several times around and on Christmas, and flying ON Christmas day is awesome. I’ve never had a full plane or huge crowds, people are surprisingly chill, it’s like the ideal day to fly and travel.

DH & I vacationed in Mexico last year over Christmas and it was wonderful! This year we will be in Florida!

Yup! Christmas to New Year's is the one week of vacation that DH and I take every year. Sometimes, it's with my family, but mostly, it's just us. We alternate between cold and hot spots every year. This is where we've been.

Seattle/Vancouver/Whistler
Jamaica
Vegas/San Fran

We have gone time icon for Christmas the last 5 years. It's our present ourselves and it's amazing. We're skipping this year because now that LO is over 2 it's crazy expensive with how high airfare has gotten ($900 a ticket). That's the only downside is that it's such an expensive time of year to travel. But being on the beach, Christmas Day with none of the holiday drama is fantastic. We will probably resume our tradition next year.

We went to Banff for our honeymoon at Christmas and it was amazing. We stayed in the Fairmont, which is a castle, they did a candlelit carol concert with a hot chocolate bar on Xmas eve, and filled stockings to leave on the guests' doors. We did a horse drawn carriage ride then went tubing in the snow on Christmas Day. Boxing Day we went skiing then floated in the heated outdoor pool then went husky sledding the next day. So, so awesome!

@sleepybear: @yoursilverlining: I don't mind flying ON holiday days, it is usually much more pleasant!
@travelgirl1: Lovely, that sounds like a story book!
@ModernDayJibarita: I would totally love to do SE Asia during that time of year!

We went to Paris and Madrid for our honeymoon. We left Christmas Eve. Got there Christmas Day - went to Notre Dame, had an amazing dinner in a nearby restaurant and just wandered the streets. It was great We then spend NYE in Madrid. That was awesome too.

We honeymooned in Italy over Christmas, and flew to AZ on Christmas Day. I agree, traveling on the actual holiday is great!

I lived in the UK for a number of years and it was cheaper to do other trips over the holidays than to head home. I went to Russia, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan, India, diving cruise in Egypt etc. I always took advantage of having extra time off and being far from family to do something extra amazing.

We went to the Bahamas over Christmas in 2013. Loved it!
We planned a Disney World trip over this Christmas, but changed our trip to Thanksgivng instead.

We are thinking of doing this during the Xmas period this year - we are in Australia so usually have summer xmas celebrations. Looking at somewhere in Asia since we won't be with family (seeing them before and afterwards) so may as well be somewhere random!

I love Christmas too much plan a holiday to "skip" it, but wouldn't mind a cozy vacay when the kids are older to celebrate.

My moms siblings all got together one year over Christmas and went to Orlando. We had a huge rental property that fit all 18 of us at like a dirt cheap price bc we checked in on Christmas. I'm the oldest "cousin" so my husband and 1 yr old daughter came too.
All the dads went golfing, moms went to spa and shopping, and the cousins (mostly college or just out of college) went to universal to see Harry Potter land. I desperately wanted to go with them but took my daughter to see Mickey instead.

We went to Australia. It was kind of our honeymoon, and it was so much fun! There were people wearing Christmas hats on the beaches We also considered staying for the New Year celebration in Sydney, but we promised family we'd be back home by then.

I think I went to Costa Rica with my sister over Christmas. Honestly I don't remember any of the details because it was 12 years ago and we are Jewish. I am pretty sure it didn't impact our trip in any way other than the fact that I missed out on my annual Christmas Day movie + Chinese food tradition.
Sadly, I had to abandon that tradition anyway when I married my Christmas-celebrating husband. Now I have another family holiday instead!

I would looooove to holiday over Christmas! We already tend to go away for Thanksgiving, and it's so nice not to have to bounce from house to house all day. Christmas is way too stressful because we have to visit no less than 5 houses and it sucks. My husband and I are giant Scrooges at this point. But now with a LO, I don't know if that's fair to him?

@travelgirl1: that sounds amazing!
when i was 8 years old my family went to Egypy for a month and it overlapped with Christmas. But we celebrated at home with a tree and presents earlier in December before we left.

@travelgirl1: I must do this!!! What an awesome experience.
As a single adult I went to Vegas at Christmas one year but so did my extended family.

@travelgirl1: I agree with the others...I want to go for Christmas. My SIL & BIL almost honeymooned there. Ended up in Argentina instead, but they were really stuck between the two.
