My DD is 4.5 and hasn't had a hair cut yet. Her hair is a little past her shoulders and needs evening out. Has anyone ever trimmed their LO's hair themselves? I've watched some YouTube videos and it doesn't seem too difficult?... any tips? Horror stories?

I did it! My daughter has curly hair, so it's a bit more forgiving as far as being even. I gave her her first haircut right around 3.5. I watched a few Deva cut videos on YouTube and then went for it. I was extremely pleased with how it turned out and I think I'll be doing all of her trims for the foreseeable future.

I cut my son's hair. At first I freaked a bit, but once I got in there, I learned what do to.
Get a pair of scissors and thinning shears. Have a spray bottle of water and a fine toothed comb near by. And a cape. And your vacuum cleaner, lol.

I am so tempted to do this. DD is 2.5 and has never had a cut. She has really curly hair and just needs a trim in one spot in the back - truly it is just one curl that hangs about 2-3 inches past the rest. You can't really see the piece here, but this is what I am working with - I'm hoping her curls will be slightly forgiving. I think I just need to go for it, I don't want to pay for someone to cut a single curl.

DD gets regular haircuts at 2.5 but I trim her bangs in between appointments.

I cut my 3 year old son's hair pretty regular and curls definitely hide my mistakes. I watched YouTube videos first and it gets easier every time I try. I would think a girl's haircut might be easier because you don't need to worry about it laying evenly on her head? You can just trim the ends.

@catgirl: my daughter has hair like that. I just set her up in her high chair and cut like 2-3 curls dry. That way I could see what I was doing. It turned out better than I thought but now she needs a real haircut because her hair is just getting unmanageable.

I did once, and it was HORRIBLE!!! I trimmed her bangs when she was two, and I honestly think anyone would believe me if I said she got ahold of the scissors herself.

I cut DD's hair. I put layers in it which makes it a little less obvious when I have a goof.

I cut my son's hair, way harder than a girls, the clippers are intimidating. I watch YouTube videos. Turns out ok!

I have cut my own hair for years. Have yet to cut my daughter's and she is 21 months. I would be nervous to mess it up though. I cut my younger brothers' hair with clippers for years and found it quite easy, but I cut it all to the same length.

@catgirl: my DD's hair is very similar to your DD's and she had that same one curl that was 2-3 inches longer than the rest (leftovers from her newborn Mohawk!). Just cut it dry, then you'll get it the right length. I should have mentioned with my previous comment that I did the Deva cut dry. I think that really helps so you can see where to cut and how even it is.

I've cut DS's hair for years. He gets a real cut 2 or 3 times a year, then I do trims at home. I've had a couple of not so great results, but it's hair, and it grows back fast. I'm pretty good at his hair now. DD is 1.5 and her hair is growing in pretty unevenly-- like a mullet-- so I'm getting ready to trim hers soon.

@catgirl: we have generic hair cutting scissors. If you are just doing one or two curls, you could probably use any scissors, as long as they are very sharp.

I've been cutting her hair for over a year. Do it in front of the tv and you should be fine

I cut all the kids hair, and my husbands. I have no idea what I'm doing, but in reality, it looks the same as when we take them to the barber.

I cut all 3 of my kids' hair. In front of their favorite show with a sucker as reward for sitting still. Bribery is key for me in getting my son to comply.

we all have stick straight hair but it's not that bad, I eyeball it at this point.

@pachamama: I also cut my boys hair with clippers. I am not as good at it as you are, but it passes. I would defiantly trim longer hair. Bangs are hard, watch some videos. My hair stylist showed me how to cut mine and it was super helpful to see some tricks.

Yep, I always cut my kids' hair. The one time I brought Xander to have it cut professionally, his bangs were crooked! Now that he finally lets me use the clippers, it's much easier. Here's a before and after:

I do not, it's not worth it to me to do it myself. DS has super straight hair and it shows every scissor mark. It's tough even for professionals to get to look good. He also has trouble not reacting to the clippers close to his ears. At this stage I'm happy to pay someone else.

I do! I have curly hair so I do a decent job on DD1's curls. We never take much off, just about an inch at the bottom every 3-6 months. Once she's a bit older and sits still better, I'll take her for a professional cut.

I cut everyone's hair in our family, even mine. And I am definitely not a trained hair dresser. I got up the courage when we were spending tons of money on DH. Then worked my way to the boys, and now me. I wear my hair up all the time though so I don't care if it isn't perfect.

Thanks for everyone's advice! It made me feel better that a lot of you give your kids at home hair cuts. I trimmed off so little I can't image having to pay someone to do it

Twins haven't had a haircut and I really don't want to pay for the haircut since it's not a lot of hair.
I did try cutting DH's hair once when he asked me and it looked really bad.
Maybe I'll get the thinning shears and try it one more time.

@maddyz: bangs are hard, I went too short a few days ago. My mom laughed.
