We were told yesterday that our 1 1/2 week old baby has moderate hearing loss. They think it's conductive, meaning it's a problem with the middle ear rather than the inner ear. It's possibly correctable through surgery but not til she's older, so she will most likely be fitted for hearing aids. My husband is taking all of this in stride, but I'm falling apart. I just want her to be healthy and to be able to hear my voice. Has anyone else faced a hearing loss diagnosis??? I feel a little in the dark about this.

Sorry to hear about your LO's partial hearing loss. She's not completely deaf so it seems she can still hear your voice, just not as clearly. Did the doctors say at what age she can have the surgery to have this corrected?

My husband has moderate hearing loss. It doesn't really effect his day to day life. When we're with a group of people he has a hard time staying with the conversation. Background noise is what gives him the most trouble. In another decade or so he'll be wearing hearing aids. At the last appointment with the audiologist she showed us several different types. I was surprised by how small they are. If you didn't know they were there you couldn't see them.
I also have a cousin who was diagnosed with hearing loss as a baby. She is four now and has had surgery. I'm betting it is a similar surgery to what your pediatrician is talking about. She has perfect hearing now as a result of surgery. She still uses sign language sometime since she used it to communicate for a couple years.
I'm sorry about your LO. I really have no idea what you must be feeling.

@Leialou: that's incredibly comforting to hear that your cousin's hearing is perfect post-surgery. I've been worrying about how well the surgery would actually work. Do you mind me asking how old she was when it was performed? Your husband's story is comforting too.
@Alivoo01: They didn't say how old she'd need to be for surgery. I wish I had asked but I was too stunned to think at the time.
