Papaya enzymes! You can get them in tablet form.
Papaya and pineapple both have digestive enzymes that can help with heartburn. I personally think papaya is more gentle (sometimes you get that sour or too sweet pineapple).

For some reason the papaya enzymes didn't really help me
When I don't feel like popping yet another Tums, I chew gum, it works like a charm for me. Just make sure it's sugar-free & mint-free.

My mom sent me a newspaper article on heartburn home remedies, and apparently pickle juice is an instant cure for some people. It's totally counterintuitive, but apparently it's something with the vinegar.
Milk sometimes helps me. I thought peppermint tea would be soothing (as it helps an upset stomach), but it made it worse for me.
I always knew to sit upright after meals to help prevent, but my OB advised sleeping propped up too if the heartburn ever gets too bad.

Eat an apple, including the skin. Or chew gum. Drinking water only aggravates it, although it might feel better temporarily. Don't eat right before going to bed and sleep with your head slightly elevated.
I suffered from heartburn for years, been to the emergency room for it twice (I didn't know what it was back then and misdiagnosed on my first visit). I've taken Rx strength Zantac, Tums, over the counter Zantac, Pepto, Mylanta. What helped me most was the Zantac, but it always gave me a sore (upset) stomach afterwards.
Just a recently I found the apple trick. It seriously works for me!

Only Nexium helps me. I tried everything--no acids, tums, and well... I love apples and didn't know they could help (they don't help me).
And I think I need a higher dose, too. I still need tums sometimes.

Glad to have this post for next time I get pregnant. I just dealt with it last time.

I was told to use papaya enzymes, too but I don't think they really help all that much. I still wind up taking tums before bed to fall asleep and then I sleep sitting up most nights. It's been awful.
Not eating right before bed has helped me though. Good luck!

@anbanan15: one if mY coworkers let me try some of hers. Awesome stuff!
I also drank milk. A nurse told me water makes it worse. I was on prescription heartburn meds during my third trimester though. I think ranitidine.
