Today they had pony rides at my son's school and I chaperoned. It was so cute! A few parents sent helmets for their kids to wear. It never even occurred to me to send a helmet! Would you have thought to send a helmet if your kiddo's school had pony rides?

I have seen fair grounds and such that have rides without helmets and it scares me. A lot of these petting zoo rides are just families with horses that bring them around, I dont think there is any certification or insurance.
I know too many people with horse injuries so its something I consider a lot.

@T.H.O.U.: so you would have thought to send a helmet? It just seemed strange to me at the time - the pony was tiny and there was a guy holding the kids on the pony. But maybe I should have been more cautious!

@winniebee: If I had thought about it, yes I would have sent a helmet.
We really shy away from horse riding in general but like a bike I want it to be known that every time you get on a horse, you should wear a helmet (no matter what the situation, age or experience level).

I don't know that I would have thought to send a helmet, I probably would have assumed there were helmets provided.
I would not be happy about my kids being on a house without a riding helmet. -
I probably wouldn't have thought to send a helmet, but after the fact I would have been surprised that the operator didn't provide them (or the school didn't reequire you to bring them) - seems like a huge liability for the school!
But what a fun activity!!!

We have horses, and my DD rides. I've ridden my whole life. It would never occur to me to get on a horse without a helmet, simply because you just never know what can happen. It's a wonderful activity, and a lot of kids really love it, but you have to take into account that you are riding an animal with a mind of it's own.

Did you give permission for this activity beforehand? Honestly I don't know I would have even given my permission. I'm paranoid though, my cousin rides horses and two years ago she was kicked in the head and had some pretty substantial brain trauma. Thankfully she has fully recovered, but I would not be comfortable with having pony rides at school.
But if I had, yes I would have sent a helmet.

Oops! We did pony rides this past weekend and did not use a helmet - but I could see why people would. The place we were had had two people holding the pony so it seemed pretty safe.

@smocks: we had to sign one yes! and the slip explicitly states children are not required to wear helmets but can bring a sport helmet from home. Oops.

I'm surprised that the people who came with the ponies didn't bring helmets with them and that that was allowed at the school.

I never would have thought to send a helmet and probably would not have done so even if the permission slip mentioned it. I'm much more lenient about the helmet thing than most people around here... not that that's a good thing

@kiddosc: my profession would indicate that I would have read the permission slip. OOPS. I was also the only mom that didn't have their kid in a helmet for ice skating this winter.

The people offering the rides should provide the helmets for the kids!

@winniebee: he wears a helmet on his bike, but I never though to put one on for his push trike or when we went sledding. Both threads I've seen here where everyone seemingly puts them on... oops

I would have sent a helmet. I am extremely cautious about any sort of riding activity. I sent a helmet when they went ice skating this winter, and only one other parent sent one too (but the ice skating rink provided helmets for the kids who didn't bring them).

I would've assumed they had them or probably not sent one. We do wear helmets while riding bikes but not while ice skating. Or, you know, walking around, except when my 18m old insists

I don't know if I would have sent one! I grew up riding and I always wore a helmet but I guess I just think of a slow moving pony ride as different? I guess I would expect the handlers to bring helmets due to liability risks.
I was also a figure skater growing up and wearing a helmet to skate sounds crazy to me. But I totally can see why you need one and I would want LO to wear one since he already hits his head 5 times a day.....Of course we also didn't wear helmets skiing either! Oh how times have changed!

I probably wouldn't have thought of it, then when I saw other kids wearing them regretted not sending one. But I also would think the pony people would have them. However at a camp I worked at like 15 years ago we did pony rides with little kids and didn't have helmets and there was a day when the regular person was sick so I was the "handler" because I was comfortable around horse and did 3 weeks of horse back riding camp when I was in middle school... Safety first.
Also, wait, kids need helmets for skating now? We haven't done that yet but that's a thing? I knew for skiing...

Every ride, even pony rides. Horses are unpredictable. As for the people with helmets supplying them, we always have a few extra helmets lying around the barn for kids to borrow until they get their own. However, we do expect them to get their own. I am constantly worried that we areally going to spread lice or something around the barn community with all of the kids borrowing the same helmets!

@Mrs. Turtle: a think expecting the kids to get their own when they are doing regular lessons makes sense, but I believe this was just a pony ride at a fair at school or something. Though I do agree with you on the lice thing!

I wouldn't have thought to send one in, but if I read the permission slip maybe I would've asked if they have helmets there.

It would not have occurred to me and my daughter has been on pony rides without a helmet.
