So until I came across this story I wasnt aware that digging holes in the beach could lead to death or serious injury due to collapse. I feel terrible for the family of this poor boy who died while digging a tunnel.

that was all over the news here because I live in the NYC/NJ area. Its so incredibly sad. I mean, all kids dig holes at the beach, who would have thought?? I know that one was big, 2-3 feet deep, but from what I understand, help was there to dig him out instantly and it was already too late.

I think the tunnel is what did them in. Holes fill, but a collapsing tunnel has more weight to it. Regardless, it's super sad.

That is so sad! But it still won't stop me from letting my kids dig holes in the future. "Not terribly uncommon" equates to 31 deaths in the last two decades sounds like an exaggeration.

It's the tunnel that's the problem, not digging holes. I actually know to be really careful about this. Growing up in Mass we used to always build holes and things in the snow. But my mom would never let us building anything that we would crawl or sit under because it can collapse and trap you. Same concept with sand.

Also, growing up in FL, we have heard stories about "burying" people in the sand. If you put too much weight on the chest, the person can have difficulty breathing and worse, if no one is around, they may not be able to get out. If you bury someone in the sand be careful not to go up on the chest.

We go camping with DH’s family at the beach every other summer and the boys always dig holes! They dig huge holes….like as tall/taller than my 6’4” husband. Last year one of them caved in while one of the cousins was in there. It was terrifying! Luckily everyone was around/watching and got him out fast but my heart stopped.

I could never dig more than a foot deep..

I know the lifeguards at the MD/DE shore won't let you dig holes deeper than like 3 feet deep. THey'll make you fill them in once they get deeper than that.

Yeah, I think digging holes is fine but it's the tunnels that can be dangerous. I don't think as a kid, I ever made sand tunnels. I have made tunnels in the snow.
It's so sad and unfortunate when something like this happens.
