On Friday I went to my routine ultrasound at 34 weeks. They found out that baby has VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect), which is a hole between the bottom chambers of baby's heart. I have been getting ultrasound every 4 weeks from maternal fetal since week 18 due to GD, and this is the first time they were able to catch it.

Overall I've had a pretty optimistic outlook throughout my pregnancy, and I'm not trying to worry too much about the diagnosis. I am going to see a specialist some time this week or next at A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital. The doctor at maternal fetal told me that it's a relatively small hole (less than 2 mm wide) and will most likely close up on its own without any surgery required. Baby will have to be monitored with heart ultrasounds. I fear if I do more research into it, I will spend the rest of my pregnancy and newborn months in a state of panic. I will probably do my research prior to my appointment with the specialist. I'm also getting weekly ultrasounds from now on to monitor on baby's weight (measuring small which isn't too common with GD patients). So I'll continue to get updates on his health from now until birth.

Has anyone had experience with VSD? Anything I should expect from the diagnosis? I'm confident that my baby will be healthy, and this is just a small obstacle for him to overcome. I'm very fortunate to have access to a great children's hospital and know he will be under great care. I'm just having trouble sleeping, and I needed to get this off my chest and maybe find some support.
