Hugs! How stressful but it sounds like you're in great hands! Hope it closes on his own before he arrives!

I'm glad they caught this now. An acquaintance's son had it (they discovered after he was born) and he is doing well. It must be stressful, and i'm sorry for the news. Hugs.

Hugs! My mom had ASD and they didn't detect it until she was in her 50s and started having some consequences. So, awesome that you have detected it already.

@yin: the only thing that might be slightly different at delivery is that they might put a sat probe on in addition to the other routine monitoring after delivery. The only conceivable change would be if they discovered additional anomalies... Otherwise this is considered common and self-limited.

Sounds like it will probably solve itself on its own, and if it doesn't it is a treatable condition. I received a couple of similar scares from ultrasounds when I was pregnant -- i.e. your child might have this condition or malformation, but it will probably clear itself up on its own. In both cases, everything was totally fine, and whatever was wrong fixed itself on its own long before DD was born. Try not to stress out. The doctors sound like they know what they're doing to get you a healthy baby!

Hugs!! I don't have any experience as a mama but I had a VSD. I don't know the details of the size but nothing special was ever done except for some monitoring. All I can remember is going to a cardiologist for an ultrasound in 1st grade and the jelly was cold.
I think most health concerns are harder on mama than baby. I'll think good thoughts for you and LO.

@yin: my cousin was born with a hole in her heart. She had surgery when she was two or three, and all that is left of the issue is the scar. She was a perfectly healthy kid...cheerleader, figure skater, dancer...never had an issue. Sending prayers your way!

my grandma was born in the early 1930's with a large hole in her heart and had to have surgery to correct it, which back then was a BIG deal. She's still kickin' at 80 years old. Medical care has come so far since then, if she could thrive in the '30's I'm sure your baby will do wonderfully!

My cousin went in for her gender scan to find a hole in her baby's heart.
By the time he was born, it had closed.
It did reopen at the age of 6, and the child was on a vent & then got surgery.
You would never guess. He is 11 & looks and acts perfectly healthy!
I'm hoping yours is never an issue for you

@yin: My sister was born with a whole in her heart in 1976. It was supposed to close but I don't know if it ever did. I don't really know any specifics about the whole, but she never did have surgery. She was seriously fine though, considering all of the other thousands of possible medical conditions that a baby or child could have. My sister was always thin and wasn't allowed to play any competitive sports. She did gymnastics and dance and choir... those kind of activities in high school. She can run, but she is advised not to use the ellipitcal machine at the gym. And when she had her baby a couple of years ago, oddly the pregnancy was considered to be good for her heart, but any sort of labor would not be. She had to have a c-section a little bit early to avoid any sort of labor at all. And, since she does IVF, she is absolutely not permitted to carry three babies. So really... she's been fine. Your little one should be fine as well.
