If you hire a house cleaner, are you usually home when they are cleaning? I've always been working before when we had someone come clean. They would just lock the door behind them.
We're finally hiring someone to start coming regularly and since I stay at home with the baby, I wonder if it will be weird to be at home while they clean? But also, I kind of think it's better - less likely to have things go missing?

I've never had a cleaner, but my in-laws do, and they're always home when she comes. I don't think she even has a way to get in if no ones home!

I'm not home when our person cleans and when I am home, it does feel a little weird. haha. I will try to be in a different rooms so it's not like I'm watching her clean. We've become very close with our person, who is a friend of a friend, and so we trust her no problem to be in our home while we're not. If you are worried about that, ask them for a certificate of insurance for both liability and employee dishonesty (theft), although this is really only applicable if you are using a cleaning service versus just an individual.

We're not home when our cleaning person comes. She has her own code to enter the home and we can easily reset it if it becomes a problem.

Ours come on Friday morning and DH usually works from home on Fridays. So he hangs in our bedroom and they do his office first. Then he goes in there and shuts the door and they finish up and lock the door when they leave. Last Friday, he was on a conference call, so the office just didn't get done.

We're not home when our cleaners come. With regard to things going missing, if you don't trust your cleaners, or feel like they need to be supervised at all times, then I wouldn't have them in your home.
ETA: I have had several sets of cleaners (three) in the last few years, and the only problem we have ever had is things not being cleaned well enough!

The first few times she came, someone stayed home. After that, we always left the house.. Was just easier so we wouldn't be in the way. There are some days that she comes on my day off, but I leave the house for that window of time since i know how long it takes her.

I hate being home when the cleaning lady is there. Hate hate hate. I try to be out if I can. Usually I need to be home for LO's afternoon nap, so I put him down and then close myself in our bedroom, lol.

I work at home so when we had a cleaning service I was sometimes home and sometimes not. I MUCH preferred to not be home because its so awkward to be here when they are cleaning I think. If I had to be home I'd just lock myself upstairs in one of the rooms we don't have them clean.
Also I was never concerned about things going missing. I don't think thats a huge problem with legit cleaning companies.

@shopaholic: personally, I felt weird being there the same time as the cleaners, so I would plan my day to be out when they were cleaning the house.

@shopaholic: We're not home. If we had to be, they'd have to come at 9pm to clean, LOL! I actually use to work with my cleaning guy back in high school and it was always a little weird when someone would be home.

When we are home, our toddler ends up "helping" with the feather duster, rags, vacuum, etc. and I think our house ends up less clean! I prefer to be out of the house, but I don't sweat it if I or our babysitter, etc. is home because I feel like it gives us more of a personal connection with the cleaning ladies. As they say, it takes a village to raise children and I look at them as part of our village

We just hired one this week and she came for the first time (and did an amazing job!). I was home the whole time, but I also WAH, so I wasn't going anywhere. In any case, we don't have a spare set of keys to give her, so I kind of have to be here. I prefer it though. It was slightly awkward for 2 minutes while she cleaned my desk, but other than that, I get a good vibe from her.

I usually leave to do errands (I trust her 110%) but am home today and she's here. She's doing the floors as we speak and they smell amazing

I've trusted all the cleaners we've had in the past, and confident about this one - since she goes to a couple of my friends' houses. I think I will just stay at home for the first visit (deep cleaning they said could take 4 hours!) and just depends on the day for regular visits. But our house now can't just be locked when they leave.

They come when I am home- working from home. It's easier since they usually cleab my home in the afternoon and I wouldn't want to leave my door unlocked all day.

I don't like being there when the cleaners are. Luckily they always come when I'm at work. Not sure what I'll do when I'm home on maternity leave. My parents don't like being home either and usually just go out for a while so they can avoid her, because otherwise she talks the whole time.

Sometimes if I work from home I'm there when they clean otherwise I'm not. I just make myself busy in another part of the house.

I can't imagine not being able to trust someone. 
I know it's a reality, but it just makes me sad. We actually hired someone and she came for the first time yesterday. I was home. She is a family friend, and it was wonderful. She did the most amazing job, and when Lorelei was napping we chatted some and I cleaned some things, too, and made some cookies while she was cleaning the breakfast area.
