I had an ultrasound at 33 weeks and they estimate that the baby is in the 95th percentile and weight 5lbs 14 oz!!! I totally freaked out because I have at least 6 weeks to go. My doctor isn't at all concerned because she said they tend to over estimate (the same place has estimated babies to be 9.5 and they end up being 6-7lbs) How can the ultrasounds be so off??

one of DH's friends baby was estimated to be 8+ lbs...she was born(on her due date) and wasn't even 6lbs! and a friend was told her baby was already 9 1/2lbs and he came out just over 8lbs.

They are notorious for being off up to 2lb in either direction. Even with a large baby acog doesn't recommend intervention (induction) unless baby is predicted to be 11+lb (when GD isn't a factor). My MW has delivered 10, 11, & even 12lb babies to ftm without issue & without significant "damage" (she's only seen one 4th degree tear in 20 years).
For a suspected large baby I would definitely look into natural birth methods.... So that you can move in birth (giving the baby chance to get into optimal presentation) & change delivery positions (squatting can give you 20% more opening in your pelvis & all 4s can help maneuver baby is shoulder dystocia is suspected.. Check out the Gaskin Maneuver).
ETA: we don't do late term u/s unless need is indicated so I have no idea what my kids were predicted to weigh.

I was told a 7 lb. baby...she was 8 lbs 10 oz! So mine was off...but the opposite way. I can't imagine how big she would have gotten if she would have went 2 more weeks! (I was enduced at 39 weeks 3 days due to high blood pressure)

Mine was very accurate, but we never had any reason to expect that LO wouldn't be average or slightly smaller. I've had friends' estimates go either way. Both were told 7 pounders, one was a little less than 6 lbs, the other was over 10.

@brady80: at 36 weeks, they estimated that my baby was already 8lbs 13 ounces. It sounds like you are doing great!
FYI - She came out at 39 weeks weighing 9lbs 7 ounces. So I think the ultrasound was a bit off but actually pretty accurate.

Mine was pretty accurate. They told me 6.5-7 lbs and she was 6 lbs 7 oz.

They told me he was a small percentile baby, and would weigh between 5-6.5 lbs(at 32 weeks). He wound up at 7lb4oz. I think they are probably pretty accurate at the time, but all babies grow at different times/rates. Mine was a fast grower at the end, and maybe yours had a spurt a little earlier!

I got my ultrasounds at a different location than my ob's office. at 38 weeks, my LO was estimated to be 9.5 lbs (so at 40 weeks, they said she could be up to 11lbs!). the doctors at that location kept pressuring my ob to induce me earlier due to size, but she refused as she did not believe that size was a legit reason and said ultrasounds can be off by 20% in either direction. I went into labor on my own 4 days before my due date and LO weighed "only" 7lbs 10oz. So for me, it was not very accurate!!

I was told she'd be big and had a big head. She ended up being 8lbs 13oz, but that was after 16 hours of labor and me getting several bags of fluid. The LC told us that long labors often lead to bigger babies because we get pumped full of fluids. I'm pretty sure they were wrong about her head size because she's always measured in the 50th percentile.

mine was pretty accurate, they estimated 8 lbs 4 oz a week before she came. She was born 8 lbs 11oz. I hear they can be way off though!!

I had a very similar estimate to yours; 33 weeks 6-6.5lbs. They estimated at full term she'd be 9.5-10.5. They were dead on 10lbs. 1oz. on her due date. Good luck!

At 36ks we were told she was close to 8lbs and at 37 wks 2 days she was born at 7lbs 13oz so pretty close

Mine was spot on. They estimated baby would be born at 7.12 and she weighed 7.13.

Mine was spot on as well, including them telling me that she had chubby cheeks and a full head of hair.

I dont think they are very accurate. I was told my baby was around 7lbs 8oz at our 38 week ultrasound but she was born nearly 3 weeks later at 6lbs 9oz

At 34 weeks mine was estimated to be 7.5lbs. I delivered a 6lb10oz baby at 40w5d. She was just long and skinny.

Mine was almost dead on. They told me she was 5lbs 3 oz and she was born the next day at 5 lbs 2 oz.

Mine was pretty accurate. They said she should be around 7.5 lbs and she came out at 7lbs. So pretty accurate. But I"ve heard of them being way off before too.

I had an ultrasound 4 hours before LO was born and they thought he'd weigh 4lb, 1oz and he was 4lb, 4oz so pretty accurate.

At 40w 1d they did an u/s and estimated that be would be right around 7 lbs. He was born 3 days later at 7lbs 2oz so i would say pretty accurate

Mine was spot on, even at 41 weeks. The u/s estimated 8lb 10oz and baby was 8lb 9oz, born 5 days later.

Mine was not accurate. There was some concern about a possible heart defect with my LO (everything turned out fine), so I had an U/S each week from 34 weeks. At 37 weeks, they estimated the baby would be over 10 lbs if born on time. My midwife warned me about the potential for shoulder dysplacia and suggested we do a c-section. As a FTM, I went along with her suggestion even though I'd been hoping for a natural birth. My DS turned out to be 8 lbs, 15 oz (he might have been 9 lbs exactly, but he was urinating when they took him out!). I was initially very disappointed not to at least be able to try for a natural birth, but he came out quick and healthy!
