Did you interview any Dr's or visit offices? I'm feeling overwhelmed by this process (and the million other things I need to do before LO arrives in Jan!!) I would like someone open to a spaced out/ alternative vaccination schedule and a pro-breastfeeding practice, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm wondering if I should just pick a practice near my house and see how it goes... Any experiences would be helpful!

We used a practice/ped that was recommended to us by a couple of friends in the town we live in. We did go to an information night to ask questions about the practice and meet some of the pediatricians as well and that was helpful.

I asked at work and my OB - the one my OB suggested was the one a co-worker used so we went there - been very happy!

My OB includes a list of pediatrician recommendations in the materials he distributes. I looked into all of them, made some notes, and then took them with me to ask him some questions at my next appointment. He gave me his top 2 {one of which sees his own children} and we made appointments to attend their prospective patients' open house night. We really liked one and that's who we went with.
FYI - They answered a lot of questions like yours during the open house. It's also a larger practice so they have many doctors {read: personalities} and we found one that meshed well with us.

We have to visit a few peds around here. We've basically narrowed it down to two practices. One is in town and walkable, so much more convenient. The other is supposed to be a slightly better practice but will require us to drive there instead of walking a few blocks. (We live in an urban area, and the walk to our car is about as far as the walk to the first ped's office. Then we would have to drive to the other area AND fight for parking.)
Anyway, I think we're probably going to go for the higher quality practice but we need to schedule the office visits so we can finalize our choice.

I also chose ours based on the recommendations of two friends. I also met with her once for an interview but I had pretty much decided after hearing about my friends' experiences with her.

Her first pediatrician was our family practice doctor. I had heard great things about him as a pediatrician, so we just decided to have one doctor for the whole family. It became apparent very quickly though that it was impossible to get in to see him on the same day, which frankly is a must for me. I decided to change to a pediatrician-only practice on the advice of my friend (@rawrasaur, actually!) and we have been thrilled with her.
So, even if you don't looove who you get the first time, it really is no big thing to switch, so don't stress too much

My family doc is a Obg and also a ped so I lucked out.

A local friend, who I knew breastfed successfully, recommended the practice right near our apt- like I five minute walk. I called to make sure they took our insurance, then went to the doctor who had an appt available the day after we left the hospital. So... Not much research but I prioritized convenience over almost everything else in those early days, and I like the doctors that we see there.
I cared that they be very pro breastfeeding, everything else we are happy to follow aap guidelines.

I asked everyone I knew locally with kids for recommendations, like 26 people total. Our pediatrician's office was raved about by 90% of people. I made a top 3 list of doctors in that practice and the one who was on call when we were in the hospital was who we went with! We loved his bedside manner when he came by our room and he has been awesome since.
No interviews. Didn't have the time or energy! -
My OB suggested her pediatrician (same practice) and I just decided to go for it! So far I love her!!

We went with the same pediatrician my nephew goes to.

We went by personal recommendations. We planned on interviewing a couple, but we had an "emergency inducement" so we just put down one of them. We like him so far, and have agreed if at any point we didn't, we'd interview others and switch!

We choose our current family dr. He specializes in peds and it's a huge plus that he speaks Vietnamese in the case that my parents ever needed to take DD in.

Thanks everyone! I wish some of the practices I'm looking at had open houses... but the one closest to our house has a prenatal interview appointment option, so maybe I'll look into that.

We took a tour and picked our first office. We were very happy for the first year (unfortunate staff changes made us switch)! We since have switched and we went by referrals. We are happy with this one as well! Referrals are huge!

I didn't have many options in our town, but I started with a satellite clinic for the hospital that I was getting prenatal care from--different town, different clinic but same parent hospital. There are 3 pedis there, so when I was 35 or so weeks pregnant I set up appointments to meet all three. I just called and told them I was looking for a pedi and asked if I could sit down and talk to them.
The girl I talked to at the office raved about the first one I made an appointment for, and when I talked to my MW about it at my next appointment she also raved about the woman (again, different clinic, different town, but they knew each other through the hospital). When I sat down with her I felt immediately at ease, and we were on the same page about the things that were most important to me. I ended up canceling the appointments with the other two.

We picked a woman who graduated a few years before me, was a chief resident, and came highly recommended. No need for interviews with a pedigree like that

I really want to know if the interviews are worth it...as a pediatrician, do doctors hate this? I tried to interview my ped when I was abroad and they basically laughed at me over the phone.
For me, the most important thing is how they deal with my son when he's having a visit. Bedside manner is so important. I also wanted a practice with many care givers, in case we needed to get in to see someone and our primary wasn't available.

@looch: We don't hate it (well, I shouldn't speak for everyone. Most don't hate it). We see it as a service to the community. It's all unreimbursed, so it's on our own dime. I really like being able to meet families in that exciting time

I chose the one closest to us from the list of recommended pediatricians given to us by the hospital. I prefer to see and experience things for myself rather than interview them over the phone. So I made my decision to stay or leave (we chose stay) based on how the doctor interacted while in the hospital post-delivery and during our one-week appointment.

My OB recommended her. We didn't interview her or anything ahead of time and just figured that if we didn't like her we could always change peds. But we ended up really loving her and her nurse practitioner. I wouldn't stress about it too much!:)

Recommendations! We didn't interview any; I didn't know what to ask anyway, so it probably wouldn't have been helpful. We chose based on multiple good recommendations, and we have been very happy!

I chose the one we're at when I moved me and DS back home after I split with my ex. I went to the same office that my brother had just grown out of. It was purely on recommendation because I had never been there before that. I've always been happy with them.
