Another vote for Redfin! We bought through Redfin as well, and were pretty happy with them.

I've found all of our housing on, of all places, Craigslist. I feel like 99% of Craigslist is crap but I've gotten really good at spotting for rent by owners. Our upper east side apt was craigslist! One tiny terrible picture looking out a window posted by a broker. And it was the most fantastic unicorn apartment of all time (1500 sq ft 2 bed prewar with a fireplace and a full floor for the price of a studio/1 bedroom. We stayed there 7 years). Our current place I also found on Craigslist. Listed by a broker, rented by an individual who I am now friends with!
I feel like Craigslist takes daily scouring with a sharp eye to weed out the crap. There is a lot of fake crap esp in NYC.

They have a one primary site that lists all homes being sold here in Sweden - hemnet.se. We first saw it online, but we pretty much skipped past it until we saw it in the local paper.

We looked at the MLS listing on our realtor's site along with looking on Zillow.com. All houses we looked at were already on the market.

We used a realtor. He had a website set up w/ MLS listings, and set it up to send me a daily digest of things that went on the market and followed my parameters. I could "favorite" the ones I liked and he would set up to go see them. I also cruised zillow, realtor.com, and a local classifieds page.

My MIL drove by the neighborhood and thought that we would like the houses. We already had a realtor and were looking so we asked our realtor to take us there and we then put in an offer.
