Wondering how you all did this.
We have a built in stove in our rented apartment (like it's built into the marble if that makes sense) and you can't remove the knobs...so I can't take them off for safety or put covers on them. So I really need to teach him that he can't touch, it's dangerous, hot! Etc.

Mine is naturally scared of hot things. She's even scared of the led light burners on her Ikea kitchen. I think I just taught her hot and cold from the taps, and she didn't like hot.

I turned the oven on so it was warm (before it got really hot) and had her touch it so she would relate the heat to "hot".

We have told her since a very young age that the oven area and fireplace area are hot and can give you a very big ouchie and should never ever be touched. It's so ingrained in her from being young and hearing that over and over again that she stays away and doesn't touch but we remind her whenever she's getting close or if we're cooking and she wants to come see or help (she's 4 now)

LO understood hot from the water faucet, and knows that hot hurts. So now, she stays verrry far away when I'm cooking and have to open the oven door, or if she's helping me do something on the stove (I'll let her stir, but she'll lean her body wayyy back from the flame).

@Rockies11: @Anagram: so from the faucet did you just turn it on hot enough that it would be uncomfortable but not burn and put their hands under?
The baby proofing guy I met with told me to boil a pot of water and then let it cool enough so that he could touch the outside and feel it was hot but not hurt him. Then when he touched and felt it yell "hot!" And basically scare him. Was this the same as what you did but with the faucet?

Ugh @sweetiepie we have been going through this with our fearless daredevil. He doesn't get it yet but I'm trying to get him to learn the word association with HOT. Sort of like your babyproofing guy, I've been letting him touch the outside of my coffee mug when he demands it while its still pretty hot (he's into wanting everything we're handling lately), or let the faucet water go slightly too hot when we're washing hands or something and jump back and yell HOT. When he goes near the stove I jump up and yell hot and pull him away. I'm hoping that he gets it soon since he's been pretty good about learning associations lately. Once he learns I'll be more comfortable using the learning tower!

In addition to what others have mentioned, I let him touch things that are hot but can't hurt him (like my coffee cup) and say "HOT!" so that he learns what that means.

@SweetiePie: oh, it wasn't planned! It's just that LO always climbs her stool to wash her hands before she can help me in the kitchen, and sometimes I've left the tap on the hot side (from washing dishes or whatever), and she'll put her hands in and then yell "hot!" and pull back really fast...and then I'll fix the temperature. So now she knows she wants to avoid anything hot.
Same with like, oatmeal. A couple of times I gave it to her too hot and now she's very cautious and tests it first with her finger before eating.

My son learned "hot" from hot foods like oatmeal or soup. We showed him how to blow on bites of food to cool them off, and he's obsessed with doing that. So after lots of repetition of "hot! Ouch!" he blows on the oven to cool it if he gets close to it at all. He seems to be naturally averse to hot things (food, drinks, hot bath water) though, so I'm guessing that helps.

We used hot mugs to teach the general concept of hot. She knows that hot can hurt!

@sandy: we've done the same. We started very young and just keep repeating it. I also use a very dramatic voice and talk about how it's hot and LO could get burned or hurt.
I've also guided my LOs in touching things that are very warm, like a warm coffee cup, to show them what warm/hot is. Obviously, this is only done under extremely close supervision.

@SweetiePie: yeah it just happened naturally with her fiddling with the taps or eating food that was a bit too warm. I think it is something that is somewhat personality dependent. My LO is a cautious type, so she really has 0 interest in touching hot things

@sandy: @lamariniere: same. We've just warned them things are hot, and reiterate any time they get too close, and they seem to understand the concept without having to have hurt themselves.

I started by letting DS feel my cup of coffee and ice water during breakfast. He would touch it with the back of his hand just a bit and I'd say "hot" and "cold" until he started repeating it. It was just something we did then all of a sudden he started pointing out different hot and cold things (hot dinner, cold ice cream etc).
