I usually stretch, drink lots of water and try not to overdo it. Maybe also take a really hot shower, and then a cold one or use some ice.
How do you avoid getting sore after a really intense workout?

Same! I spend the last 10+ of each workout stretching, lots of water, and a hot shower or bath!
I also try not to overwork out too!

chocolate milk! Seriously... it has a great balance of proteins and sugars and helps me recover from long runs. Pre-pregnancy, I immediately took an anti-inflammatory and stretched. Oh and the foam roller of doom too... hurts so good.

I never would have tried it @mrbee but they were giving it away after a half marathon and it tasted surprisingly delicious and made me feel awesome. I don't typically drink milk otherwise!

@mrbee: my husband swears by protein shakes and eating super high protein meals after an intense workout. The way he explained it is if you lift super hard your muscles are rebuilding/regenerating and consuming protein speeds up that process so you aren't as sore the next day

Dynamic stretching pre exercise and static stretching post exercise. However the only way to prevent soreness is decreasing intensity of the workout. Soreness isnt a bad thing though!
