Tonight I tossed together dinner without a recipe. It actually turned out well and I was shocked. Haha. I'm normally a recipe follower.
Do you use a recipe or just toss some stuff together?

I'm kind of anal and normally need a least a general recipe to follow. I think of myself as a pretty good cook in that I can tackle complicated recipes/techniques and 99% of what I make comes out well. But I'm definitely not good at inventing meals from a bunch of ingredients.

I don't usually follow recipes--only when I'm baking!

Most things I just wing it. But if it's something that I don't cook often, I definitely need the recipe. I love recipes!

@mediagirl: I usually use a recipe, but there are some things that I have memorized or just guesstimate & "invent"

Most often no, but I do go to recipes for inspiration and to learn new tricks.

If I'm trying something new, I'll use a recipe, but when it comes to things I've made before I'll try it from memory.

@artbee: arugula with cherry tomatoes, goat cheese and oil and red wine vinegar topped with quinoa, topped with grilled salmon. It was healthy, to boot! I found I like salads when they have grains in them.

I rarely use a recipe. When I do, I go by the general ingredients and then go by my "instincts"
When baking, I always use a recipe!

I only use a recipe when baking. Otherwise, I just taste as I go!

I require a recipe! I can't do the whole "taste as you go" thing. However, I have done it twice, and it turned out not too bad. Still too scared to constantly cook without a recipe though.

I use recipes as a basic guideline, but I always end up modifying it and making my own version.

It depends, if it's something I cook regularly I skip the recipe, if it's something I'm trying new, or baking I always use a recipe.

I only recipes for baked goods like cakes and pastries. But if I am cooking on the stove top I rarely use a recipe.

I go back and forth. Sometimes I'll use a recipe as a guideline and change it according to what I have on hand or what I think would be good. Sometimes I just throw stuff together, other times there is a recipe I really wanna try, so I will follow it.

Both. There are some things I need a recipe for (like spinach and artichoke mac and cheese - it'd be too soupy without). Other things, like honey apple cider vinaigrette, are to taste. Many things, I find a recipe for, like the idea, and make up my own version.

I don't use a recipe unless I'm trying something new. Then I'll find one to use as a guideline.
