I'm a news junkie, so I read as many sources as I can online and check Twitter hashtags (Twitter is really good for breaking news, updates, and on the ground reports.) I'm usually vocal on social media, in various FB groups, and have discussions with friends and family.
DH and I also take time to figure out how we're going to handle LO. Some things we tell her and some things we are just careful when we talk in front of her

@mrsjazz: I am such a researcher at heart. After 9/11 I made a survey to find out how people found out information following the attack. I wish I followed through and sent out the survey but I'm sure that was my dealing with and making sense of something in such darkness. Times have completely changed in the way we get our information. My FB friend just made a pretty scary post about hearing a loud boom and then an electrical outage in Oregon. It made it sound like it was the whole city. Google didn't offer anything up so I wrote her back for an update. Immediately her friends started responding- we are good in xyz. Nothing happening in xyz. We definitely have the ability to get firsthand accounts before the news/ experts/officials these days.

Usually, I consume as much relevant info as possible from cable news, online stories including local articles that are posted online. I talk about the news with DH and my parents. I find most IRL people are just sick & tired and too drained to want to discuss current events. That's fine by me since those type of discussions can get heated even when you somewhat agree with someone.
I really enjoy reading the comments posted on HB about current event topics and especially ones that link to articles I otherwise would not have found myself.

Lots of reading. I used to work in daily tv news coverage, and I can't break the habit of reading as much as possible to gather info after something happens!

Lately something between the first and third. I try to read up right away, but often the first news about the events will be blatantly wrong or knee jerk things and I'm just so burnt out on bad news, sometimes I have to wait a day or two to read more about it and get more accurate information. I read what people post on social media but rarely get involved in discussions on it, but will discuss with close people in real life.
