I like the name Cara but am realizing it may not be a "good" choice in that people will not pronounce it the way I hear it in head. And, I don't know any Cara's IRL so not sure what the "norm" is
I realize pronunciation may be a regional and/or ethnicity may play a factor.. so, FWIW, this would be for a little Asian girl in SoCal

But, I don't want to set LO up for a future of having to pronounce/spell it out to everyone..
For some reason I feel like people will see it and say "Car-ah" like Lara haha

When I see it spelled with a C, I pronounce it car-uh; when it's spelled with a K, I say care-uh. This could all be based on personal experience though as I know one of each and this is how they pronounce it!

@mauxie: I feel like no matter what you name your kid, you run that risk. I have an extremely simple name that's pronounced exactly as it's spelled and I have to correct people every day. [shrug]. I say name your kid whatever you like

I've known two Caras and one pronounced it Care-ah, the other Car-ah. Without knowing the person's preference, I would probably say Care-ah but prepare to be corrected.
My DD's name is like this -- most people pronounce it the common way, with a long A, but it's actually pronounced with a short A in my DH's first language (which is the version of the name that we chose). I feel bad that she will have to correct people, but we really lived the name!

Interesting. We have Lana on our list and I think most people know Lana (Pronounced Lah-nah) from Lana Lang from Superman and I think another celebrity... but I'm wondering if people who are not familiar with the name... will think of the name Dana... and pronounce it like Lay-nuh. I'm thinking it will be rare when that happens.

@bluestriped bee: I love the name Lana, (lah-nah) too, but it's a coworker's name so it's not on our list. I would think people would avoid saying Lana like Dana, but I guess you never know

Care-uh! I knew a girl named Cara and she pronounced her name this way. It was interchangeable with Kara (also knew a few girls by this name).

I went to high school with a lot of girls named Cara/Kara. It also happens to be really similar to my name, which is why it stands out to me. Every one that I knew pronounced it Care-uh.

My best friends name is Cara and goes by Care-uh but she says it is 50/50 on the way other pronounce it. She gets Car-uh a lot and even stopped correcting teachers ect growing up because it happened so often but also a lot of people assume Care-uh. So I really think either way it is going to be said wrong from time to time.
