The movers are here today, and we are having them pack up all of our stuff. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have packed all of this crap up ourselves! I'm basically exhausted by the move and they are really doing all of the work. Especially with a baby in tow! Even DH, who is Mr. Smart Money admitted that there was just no way we could have gotten out of this house ourselves, and the extra cost was well worth it!
How in the crap did you do it??? Especially if you had a LO?

We just moved two months ago and we did everything ourselves, it was hard work and very stress ful but its all over now!

Haha, we've moved ourselves twice with two kids! We just packed gradually, one box at a time. Also, it was a lot easier the second time since we were only moving a few miles than it was the first tine when we moved a few states.

Now that we are in the family stage, we will never move ourselves again. I'll pack the important stuff myself, but nothing else. It's just too much.

My last move I mostly concentrated on one room at a time. I boxed up everything and labeled it with what room it was going to. But by the end there was so much stuff I wasn't keeping that I didn't have time to get rid of, I had the movers moving things out to the garbage.
How much does it cost to have movers pack your stuff for you? I'm kind of scared of packing up 2 people plus baby's stuff when we move out of this house, and it's not even all that big.

Yeah, no clue. If we moved...I'd lock-up my house down and leave it as is. I'd buy all new stuff and pretend it never happened..

I've never used movers, so it's all I know. You just get started and go, go, go until it's done. Then collapse from exhaustion before you have to unpack it all!

We also had our movers pack for us last time we moved...I was in the 1st tri and exhausted! Can't imagine doing it now with LO either.

ETA: I don't think I could ever pay someone to pack & move for us. hmmm...

I have no idea. After every international move I sit down and think - how did I get myself into this? Never again! And then I do it again six months later. So glad that next year we'll be settling down for the long term (ish).

We've done it 4 times in 5 years. Two times were cross-country. It's a huge pain in the ass. But it's also great because we get rid of so much stuff with each move. If we had movers pack for us, we'd just keep accumulating without weeding down our current possessions, and we'd have no room for everything!

@MrsCB: It was about $700? We figured we'd spend a couple of hundred on moving boxes/wardrobes/etc, and so the net/net was really only $500...They are also keeping a list of what is in each numbered box and we get a carbon copy.
Also, I purchased extra insurance for certain items in case they were damaged (we have a pretty major flat screen, a custom leather sofa, and also our bedroom suit) and I only paid $150 to insure about $15K worth of items, and ins only replaces them if they are damaged if the movers pack it up. I think it only gets replaced if it's lost if we did the packing so that was another incentive. Moving companies only offer insurance for 60 cents per lb. So if you have a super thin flat screen and they destroy it, you'd get like $25 or something. I feel better knowing that at least the really expensive stuff is totally insured.

I've only moved from apartment to apartment, so it's not the same as moving from a big house to house, yet it still always seems like a mess. We had movers, but we packed everything ourselves, and it was exhausting. And LO isn't here yet and we hadn't bought anything for the baby since we didn't want to move it! We are in this apartment for 2-3 years, then we are buying something and not moving for a long time.

We have always moved ourselves, when we moved from our last place we had a 3 year old and I was reallllly pregnant but you gotta do what you gotta do and thankfully we have a couple friends hahaha!

@PrincessBaby: Um... we paid more than half that just to get our stuff moved across the city. And we did all the packing ourselves (except the TV, and some furniture, that they wrapped up). Sounds like your deal is a lot better.

We've moved a few times and I'm not sure how we do it. Last time we packed everything ourselves in a few days and DH had some people come to help him load the truck. I was 38 weeks pregnant and it was a cross country move so it was especially exhausting.

@Foodnerd81: Maybe that is why I feel like it's an impossible amount of stuff, this is the first house we moved out of TOGETHER, with both of our stuff, and H has totally taken over the house with all of her stuff....It always seemed more manageable I guess when it was just MY stuff from a condo.

I did it while 8 months pregnant and it was a real pain. Luckily, I had help from my in-laws and hired movers to do the actual moving. It was a local move though... if I was moving far then I would have probably paid for someone else to do the packing with the insurance and everything.

@Foodnerd81: Oh well that was just for the packing! Our total for the move, including them packing us up and storing our stuff for 2 months while we rent a furnished condo and wait to close on the house we're building is $4500- moving from south FL to SC.

I only have a small one bedroom apartment right now, but I have no idea how we are going to pack our stuff up and move it in a month when we go to a larger place. Like others posted, I always use moving as an opportunity to get rid of a lot of junk that we accumulated overtime. That definitely helps.

I've never moved with a child, but our last move (last year), I had about a month to do it all. I'm the primary packer, and we moved three times in 18 months, so I have it down to a science. I started with the things we didn't need (off season clothes, decor, kitchen stuff we weren't going to use), and the progressed until it was done. On the day of, we usually have a misc. box.
I did pack our entire apartment over two weeks once. I never want to do that again. There was more than one meltdown.

By having someone else watch LO and just hauling a** and getting it done, and then taking lo with us to set up most stuff and move some things ahead of time..that was only for a temp move, though, so we didn't necessarily take EVERYTHING. But most things, furniture included. You do what you have to I guess!

we moved when the boys were about 2 and I was 7 months pregnant. It took me a month to pack everything up and we were living on paper plates for awhile. We did get movers for the day we moved to load and unload the truck but I did all the packing. Slowly but surely I got it all packed up. With three boys running around the house it felt like I was never going to get anything done. I feel guilty saying it but they did watch a lot more TV the few weeks before we moved because I could pack up a box in about 20 minutes while they watched a show then get it taped up before they came and unpacked it all.

@PrincessBaby: I will say that I did all the packing for the most part, but I have an amazing family that moved us. DH and them did it all, and I directed people on where to put stuff in the house. Then my Mom and 2 Aunt's unpacked the kitchen while I told them where to put it all.

@PrincessBaby: We just moved (2 weeks ago today!) with a 9 month old. DH and I packed up over the course of a couple of weekends, and then we had movers come to move everything (it was a local move). It was a major undertaking. What was key for us was having someone watch LO (my MIL) while we packed. Otherwise . . . I don't know what we would have done!

Currently in the packing/moving process at 6.5 months pregnant. We are hiring movers to take the furniture and heavy boxes but we are doing the packing and taking the lighter stuff to the new house ourselves. We just took one room at a time.

I have never had movers and have moved with kids and pregnant. You just suck it up and do it. I love the first night in a new place- we usually order pizza and sit around on boxes (and of course have a beer). It is hard work, but I just couldn't fathom spending the money to have people pack my stuff.

It sucked moving with a baby and DH lives/works out of town. Seriously, it suckkkked! I would pack before LO got up and after he went down each night.
