This is my greatest pet peeve of pregnancy. I always get the first appointment of the day, but I've already been waiting 30 minutes!! I have to go to work. It makes me want to skip appointments! It really annoys me

OMG! Waiting to see my midwife was the worst! Especially when DH would come with me and was missing work too! We frequently waited between 30-60 minutes The issue was that the midwife allocated 15 minute appointment times, but we were always in there for 20-25 minutes, so of course they were going to be behind. I don't get it!

I only wait about 5-10 minutes at most. I couldn't wait for 20-25 minutes. That sucks.

Normally it's 10-20 minutes, over that I get really annoyed since I leave work early for these appointments. Knock on wood, this pregnancy the appointments have been a lot smoother and quicker.

5 minutes at the most. Maybe my OB knows that making a pregnant woman wait is a bad idea? Ha!
Sorry you have to wait so long - that sucks

Yeah huge pet peeve of mine! Sometimes the dr is off delivering a baby and then I'm just SOL waiting. I have started calling to see if they're on time for appts b/c otherwise, that's time i spend sitting there, twiddling my thumb, and it's just time i have to make up at work later.

@LuLu Mom: it's going to be especially bad when appointments become every 2 weeks and weekly. So much wasted time!
I ended up waiting 35 minutes today. I wonder if evening would be better, but then if have to take LO with me. I'd only miss 30 minutes of work as opposed to 1.5 hours though

Wow, 30 minutes is crazy! I usually schedule mine early, but I only ever have to wait 10-15 usually.

Aw, that stinks. I don't understand why they make you wait if you're the first appointment, or the first after lunch. Always makes me think of poor planning and logistics. But, our MW office is great and I generally don't want longer than 5 - 10 minutes.

It depends! I've waited only 5-10 min, to almost an hour! I usually try to get the 1st appointment, I have a lunch appt coming up so I'll see how that goes. Also I've gone to different locations (it's a group practice) and it alll depends on day of the week, time of the day, etc!

At least 45 mins. That's a good day. 1.5 hours + on a bad day. I think it is somewhat standard where I live and I lurve my ob so I put up with it.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
Usually an hour. I have waited almost 2 hours more than once though. Last time I had the first appointment after everyone got back from lunch & I only had to wait 15 minutes! It was great! I plan on requesting that time slot from now on

I try for as early in the morning as possible and have been fairly fortunate this pregnancy. My wait has been fairly minimal. My prior pregnancy was horrible with waiting though. I remember one day waiting over an hour (closer to 2) and then needing to re-schedule due to an emergency surgery. It was very frustrating.
I wonder if you OB does rounds at the hospital first and that causes the delay?

My new OB is TERRIBLE about wait time. My ex-OB was better. But I think I would have been at risk for a c-section if I had not switched, so I am ok with waiting -- especially now that I am no longer pregnant so it's only once per year!

My midwives come to me, but, it isn't unusual for the to be anywhere up to 20 minutes late. But, at least I'm at home and can still get stuff done or laze about on my own couch.
When I still went to Kaiser it was really unpredictable. Usually I waited less than 10m. Once I waited more than 90m.

The wait time at my old OB could be like 2 hours! Now I'm at a practice with an OB who's new in town, and he doesn't have a lot of patients yet. No wait time.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Usually less than 15 minutes, but once it was 45 because the on-call midwife was delivering a baby and the other two were at a conference.

@MamaG: I think she was doing rounds because she mentioned being at the hospital. Maybe I will try right after lunch or evening. Though the one evening appt I had I waited over an hour dh and lo were with me.

Usually 10-15 min. I would be really annoyed if I had to wait any longer.

Thankfully my practice just opened a brand new office in another town so I've been going there and the wait has been 10-15 minutes tops. At the old office they were overbooked and typical wait times were about 25-40 minutes.

Usually 5-10 minutes & I schedule afternoon appointments. There have been a few times where my OB was at the hospital delivering a baby and I had to wait forever.

One thing I love about my practice is that I almost never have to wait. I was living out of state for work during my first trimester, and while I liked the OB I used while I was there, I always had to wait 30-45 minutes even with the first appointment of the day. I would have elevated blood pressure by the time the doctor saw me!!

In the US, I often waited 45min to 1 hr. In Austria, never more than 5 min!

@yellowbird: We were with a small midwife practice. It was in an old home, with no real waiting area. This meant we went right in. There was one time we had to wait about 5 min, because my midwife was helping the previous client load her kids into the car. We chose this practice because we had heard great things about the way they scheduled appointments, and that the did several home visits.

@Boheme: What!?!? I would tell them I was going out, and they could call when they were ready. That's insane!

At least 30 minutes every single time. I've waited an hour before.
persimmon / 1310 posts
Most of my appointments have been in the afternoon. I've waited between 10 and 30 minutes past my appointment time. It's a birthing center and due to the way they rotate, I don't think the midwives doing appointments get called away for delivery unless there are multiple women in labor at the same time. Their appointment cards ask you to arrive 15 minutes early, which I stopped doing since it didn't seem to help and just meant I sat there longer. Now I get there 5 minutes before, maybe 10. I wouldn't mind if they would put more comfortable seats in the waiting room; theirs are terrible with no support at all.

Usually about 10 minutes to get called to be weighed/etc and taken to a room. Then another 10 minutes before the doctor comes in.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
Each time I have been, it's been a 30 minute to hour long wait.

About 10 minutes in the waiting room and about 10 minutes in the exam room. I always tried to avoid Mondays and Fridays since those are usually really busy days.
pomelo / 5258 posts
I waited 45 minutes in a gown yesterday while DH waited in the waiting room (so the doctor could ask if he was abusing me when she finally showed up). The only thing that kept me sane was focusing on getting a break from work + toddler. When I finally had my ultrasound they said "oh, your bladder is full." Well, duh you made a pregnant woman wait a long time. I'm switching practitioners for the next appointment. I asked for the most punctual person.
