Depends on what I'm calling about, although maybe this is weird but I never end up talking to my OB/midwife with either pregnancy - they would take a message and have a nurse call you, which usually took like 20-40 minutes. If the nurse could handle it she would, if she felt it was serious enough she would pass your info to one of the on-call OBs/midwives. And if it was a real emergency you were supposed to just call triage to get straight to the on-call OB/midwife quickly.

I should add that with both pregnancies I went to a practice where all of the doctors there work out of the same hospital. You can see just one person, but if you're in labor or having an emergency you get whoever is there/on-call at that time.

My time frame really depends on what I'm calling about, but it does seem weird that they don't have nurses to talk to you.

During the work day, if it isn't an emergency they call back within an hour or so (on-call nurse). If its an emergency, they keep you on hold and put you through to a nurse right away. On off hours, they call back within 20 mins (or tell you to call again if you haven't heard from them).

During labor, I don't remember. It felt like a long time and a short time since I lost all track of time. But when I called for mastitis, they didn't call back for a couple of hours. So I guess it depends.
