I feel like my productivity is so dependent on the kids' health and sleep! I absolutely hate it, but struggle with solutions.
How many hours of actual work do you get done a day?

totally depends on how much work there is to do. The less there is to do, the more i screw around. If i have lots to do, i have no problem putting my nose to the grindstone. It's feast or famine in my field!

Depends on the day - today maybe 4 hours, but on a Friday more like 8+. Like pp said, the less there is to do, the more I screw around!

As others mentioned, it depends on how much work needs to be done and when the deadline is. So some days I work about 4 hours, but then I have days when deadlines are bumped up or are super tight and I'll work 8+. It all balances out later on.
I used to work as a consultant and my bonus was based on "chargeability" so if I finished a project ahead of schedule, then I was "docked" for it because they orginially budgeted X number of hours and had already told the client they were getting billed for those hours. So when I finish ahead of schedule, then that's less hours they get to bill and while I was super productive, number wise, it looks like I wasn't productive at all. It totally sucked!

I'd say on average 4-5. Which SUCKS because I am ft. I would tell management that my position really doesn't need to be ft (or exist at all!)...but then again, I like having a job...

@doxielove: I feel the same! My job could easily be part-time, as long as the person doing it was efficient (which I am! I'm great at HBing in between getting stuff done).

@tororojo: "don't tell my boss" << my thoughts exactly
I used to ask for extra work and projects...trying to hint that I was bored without SAYING, "hey, you know I have no work to do??" No one got the hint or ever came up with anything for me to do even though I've discussed this during reviews, etc. Moral of the story is: I don't feel bad anymore for not working!!

@doxielove: Yeah, I actually don't think my boss cares if we goof off, as long as work gets done. But I think it would be a much better use of resources to pay fewer full-time folks! I hate being bored at work...part of the reason why I'm not coming back after baby, even though I know a lot of people would love to have some down time!
