We only spent one day actually going out and looking at four houses and ended up buying the first one we saw! I'd spent so much time searching online that I just knew.
How many did you visit before you bought your home?

We saw about 20, but only 2 were in serious contention.
ETA: In person. We ruled out so many online!

We're building! We looked at a ton of houses online and we weren't happy with any of them.

Once we narrowed it down to our neighborhood it went fast. We saw a lot of houses though just looking around in areas.

DH looked and bought in the same day, by himself since it was 6 hours away and I was 38 weeks pregnant. He looked at 5 in person and bought.. 1

With our current house, we saw... at least 20 in person, and put in four offers before we found/put in an offer on the house we eventually bought.

Oh how crazy! We were looking at houses today. I have no idea how long this process is going to take...
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Maybe 5 houses? I knew this house was it right away though.
pomelo / 5326 posts
I think we looked at about 15 or so over a 5 month period. We definitely knew ours was "the one" when we found it.

30+. We started looking in April and then didn't find our house till the end of December.

I looked at nearly 100 the first time (2005 market. 6 offers. Got an amazing deal and the house never lost value through the bust).
The second time we looked at 36 houses. It was the second one we saw. Only offer we put in.
Third time it was the first house we saw. We weren't really looking for a house but the house, interest rates and price aligned to make it right. We only looked at about 10 other houses and only as comps.

A ton! We even put an offer on one, but it wasn't accepted. We fell in love with another house, but it was a divorce situation and the wife refused to move out.
We finally found this one, and put an offer on immediately!!

Um - 400? We wrote about 10 offers, were in contract on 3. Two had bad inspections and the third was a short sale that went nowhere. In retrospect we should have bought one of the ones with expensive repairs. They both sold for more than the difference in repair cost (~$30k) within two weeks of us walking away. We were just too scared to put up the extra cash for repairs on top of a huge down payment. Now everything is up $100k. We suck at home buying.

We did lots of online research before buying both our houses.
First house: we bought the first one we looked at, but altogether saw about 10-15 houses over 2 days.
Second house: saw 5 houses in one day, then after a week of thinking decided to put offer on the one we initially thought we liked the least

So many. Had an offer on one of them but couldn't come to an agreement during negotiations. The one we bought came on the market the day they had an open house, we saw it and put an offer in, and they accepted that night.

I think we saw 8 or so, but we also ended up buying the first one we saw We thought "we can't buy the first one we see" so that's why we looked at more, but quickly realized the first one was way better than all the others!

We saw about 15. 3 were serious contenders, but we finally found one that was right for us. We have the home inspection tomorrow, so let's hope things go well!

At least 30! We only put in one offer and got accepted luckily. It had only been on the market one day and a better offer came in right after we signed the contract.

With our first house, we must have looked at 30+ houses and out offers in on 3 altogether before purchasing one. We just bought our second house and it was actually the first one we looked at this time around!

We looked for over a year.... and I can't even count how many houses we saw. I never want to look at houses again!

We looked at 40+ Offered on 10 we were always beat out by cash offers After all of that looking I feel so fortunate that we are in the house we are in.

Oh wow, I'm definitely in the minority here! We looked at one place and bought it!
coconut / 8861 posts
30+ condos. We bought the first place we looked at after a good 5 months. By the time we bought, the couple had been through a number of failed offers. We were the only ones with a solid offer. We had to put a fair amount of earnest money down to ease their fears of another failed contract.

I think 8. I know we went looking 3 times, and on the third time, I found the house on line. When we went inside the house, even though it was decorated like a bad 1980's movie, there was a napkin holder in the kitchen from my husband's birth country, which you just don't see a lot of around here. That's how we knew it was our house.

We waited months before we found the perfect house. We didn't really look for a house for cosmetic reasons... rather for the best investment. The house we got is as close to perfect we could have hoped for, and we got in at a great time!
pear / 1556 posts
First one we saw! We actually weren't looking to buy a house for another year, but I was browsing listings in the area we wanted to buy in just in case I saw something. I ended up seeing a house that looked perfect for us. We scheduled a showing and put an offer in that same day!
I love that everything worked out, but sometimes I regret not being able to look at more houses. I love watching House Hunters and all those shows, so I would have enjoyed seeing a few more.

In person we looked at 5 houses. Our house was the 4th that we saw (based on the location when driving around, we didn't look in order of how much we liked them). It was actually way down on the list before we saw it in person but we put an offer in the next day!

We looked at hunnnndreds online (probably doesn't count!) and then did a walk-through of one. We then found a new development quite a ways away from where we were originally looking, walked through 3 or 4 houses in that development, then made the decision to call up the builder and do it!
watermelon / 14467 posts
We looked at a ton online, went to probably 20 open houses (to see houses and find a realtor), and then I think we looked at 15 houses in person before narrowing it down to the top three. I walked into our house and declared that it was the one, and it ended up being the one.
persimmon / 1396 posts
We looked at 39 over a 5 week process. We bought our house, which was the 40th one. We knew what we wanted, but just couldn't find it!
coconut / 8279 posts
like a million... still haven't found one.
we need the right amount of space, storage, parking and laundry in the right location at a good price, so we're tough to sell to.
bananas / 9357 posts
we bought our house 5 years ago so i don't remember how many we looked at exactly but it was a lot. Probably over 20 and we looked for like a year. We looked so long that our first Realtor gave up on us and stopped returning our calls.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
we bought in 2009... looked for three months and at over 100 houses. we found our house on the day we decided we were going to pause our search if we didn't find anything!
pineapple / 12793 posts
Over 100. We've bid on six and been outbid every damn time. It blows.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Probably around 30-40. We entered into contract on our first place and it fell through at the last minute, so that number includes both hunting experiences. We were very specific about the neighborhood and the apartment though, so there was only a narrow pool for us to consider to begin wtih.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
When we bought our condo we looked at around 5 places.
In our current house search we've looked at at least 50 houses so far... maybe more. I don't keep track anymore and we were at open houses every Sunday for over a month. We've bid on 3, had one offer accepted but it fell through after inspections. We're putting the kibbosh on house hunting for a while now and just being happy in our very comfortable rental!
@rachiecakes: where are you looking? We sound so similar. Wall me if you don't want to post here!

@mrs. wagon: I'll leave off the first letter: ewton, altham, atertown, rlington, elmont, and we've looked at a few in atick but I think that's a little far for us. Our parents live in the olton/oncord area, so we want to be in that direction of Boston, not too far from the Pike.
If your condo just had one more bedroom or a study...
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@rachiecakes: lol! yeah, you guys are looking just north of where we were originally looking. Now we've narrowed it down to basically just one town (-est-ood) but the prices are so high in that town... The deal that fell through was on a starter home in very rough shape, but we're glad it fell through because it convinced us to wait 2 more years to be able to save up more and buy something we can stay in for a long time. And to actually be able to afford the town!!!
I'm rooting for elmont for you!! I have friends and coworkers who live there and absolutely love love love it. I lived in atick (well, on the ramingham line, right across from the mall) right after college and I hated it so much. The area is so convenient, but the drive into Boston was JUST a bit too far. Always felt like a really long trip.

We spent two evenings looking - and saw 8 houses each night. However, the first night we put in an offer (and lost it), and the second night, put in an offer on the house we own now!
