If there were no other factors (money, space, etc) how many kids could you handle having?
I am capped at my two, if I had a third I would lose my mind. I don't know if it's because my girls are really needy (especially my 3 year old) but I just don't think I could handle any more kids, mentally! I sometimes think: "aww a baby, maybe one more" and then we have a play date or something and I'm all like "nope, I'm good!" I honestly don't think I could be the best mom if I had any more kids.

If money were no object and we had an appropriately sized house and maybe a maid and could afford classes and preschool I would do up to 6 or so!

I'm finally getting time to work and have a personal life again! If I didn't care about those things, then I could probably do a third child... but it'd be hard to balance everything with three.

We're now planning on three, so with none here already I better be able to handle three!

3 - which is what I'm having. However I often wonder if my answer would change if I was a SAHM.

I'm very comfortable with my two and am usually OK when we have playdates and there are others around.
I don't think three will be awful so maybe four.

I think 3 or 4. Although my limit would maybe be drawn more by how limiting pregnancy/infants-toddlers can be, and less about the actual kids, if that makes sense.

@Mamasig: you think you'd want more or less if you SAH?
I really don't know. I'm still stuck between deciding if 1 is our max or if we should try for another at some point. But I'm also curious how working will change my perspective, if at all. After the initial adjustment period I can't decide if I'll maybe enjoy my child a higher % of the time because I see her so much less? (And thus maybe think we would enjoy another). Or if I'm going to be so overwhelmed managing a job and my marriage and a kid that it will close the door on any discussion of a second.

2 is plenty for myself and my husband. I think I would be batty with 3. I just can't imagine it. I'm busy enough managing two for the next day and barely have time for myself at night.

3-4? I was watching 4 kids today and kind of loving it but it seems like full time that would be totally crazy. Maybe I could manage up to 4 but 2 or 3 would be more ideal.

@Mae: I'm pretty sure I'd want less. Two would be my max and that would be so #1 could have a sibling! I love being a working mom. Sure it's hard sometimes, but I enjoy my time with them so much more because it's limited. I think it kind of makes me more chill about stuff too. Since I'm not with them all the time, I have to let some things go because I can't control it.

Three. My two are pretty crazy (3.5 and 1.5), but we're still planning on a third. Hopefully the first two will settle down a bit eventually.
If we were waiting longer for #3 then maybe 4, so we'd have two close sets of two, spaced further apart...but I think if I wait long enough to make that realistic, then I won't have 3 either, I'll just stop at 2.

@PinkElephant: I feel the exact same way. In an ideal world I would love two sets close together but I know once we get out of the diaper/baby stage I will probably not want to go back. DS2 is 19 months now and it's so much easier so now I'm waffling on whether or not to even go for #3.

3 is my max regardless of any factors. We plan on 2 and are open to the idea of a 3, but it's unlikely. The logistics of our lifestyle would be hard with 3.

hmm if money or space wasn't a factor, I think I could handle 6! I would loooove a huge family like that. Our plan is to have 4 though

We are struggling with two (though one is two weeks old so I know it will get easier). Totally agree with @Mamasig that it would be harder to stay at home. The only reason I can even handle having two is that one is in full-time preschool!

@skipra: Dooooo it! I'm of the mindset that we'll just have to accept a few more years of crazy, then it'll be fine. I know long term I'd like three....and hope that in the 10 months (at least) it would take for a baby to get here, DD1 is a little less threenager-y.

I could totally see myself with 5 or 6 little ones. We already spend so much on food that I don't think it would ever be a real possibility.
