How many square feet is your home? Is it a good amount of space for your family?

1,900 sq ft. I think it's a good size, but I wish it was distributed differently. I would trade in one of our two living areas for a much larger kitchen and a dedicated entryway.

These are things that didn't bother me when we bought the house, but our needs have changed now that we have two LOs.

    3400 + 1000 partially finished basement + 3 car garage.
It's our forever home, so I think it's a good size for our family to grow into. The kids have a large playroom that will one day be their study area and DH has an office. We also have 2 guest rooms since our families both live out of the state and we wanted them to be able to stay with us when they visit. We have lots of friends who live out of state and stay with us when they're in town as well.

Ours is a 3 level, each floor is 1,000 sq ft. The basement is semi finished but we only use it for storage it is cold down there- we will probably make it into a playroom in the future and do some upgrades at that time. Right now it is just M and I, with a baby coming soon. We both work from home so a fair amount of that space is our offices. I expect if we have 2 it will start to feel a little tight and they will likely share a room at least for the first few years. Since it is 1910 built the rooms are really closed off, but overall the space is very functional and we love it.

1,000. It's plenty of room for us right now, but the layout sucks. I'd love 1800-2000, and we'll definitely need another bedroom in the future. I want a playroom SO BAD.

I'm in a tiny SF apartment that's about 750 square feet. The master bedroom is a good size, the second room is pretty small yet decent, but the kitchen is a teeny tiny joke. The apartment has been great for just the two of us, but I'm pregnant and I have a feeling once our little man gets here, it's going to start feeling really small really fast.

While I would love more space, the rental market is nuts out here so I'm just grateful that we have a second room. A lot of my friends in the city have one bedrooms and put their baby in the closet, so I'm not complaining!

1400ish, we are starting to feel constricted now with a new baby on the way, I don't need a huge house, but our next one I hope to a full finished basement, right now we only have 1/2 basement and it's not big enough. Luckily we have plenty of storage in this house and I just purged which helps.

2,950 and we are working on finishing parts of our basement right now. It is a good size for us and we never plan on moving so it is definitely a house that meets our space needs long term.

1500 sq ft 3/2 with office. We have one toddler and baby on the way. I think it will be just right for us. Time will tell. We don't have a lot of storage but that has limited the amount of crap we keep around.

When looking for a house I really wanted two hang out areas so I could have some separation: adults/kids, me/DH, guests/me. We were fortunate enough to find a place with two spaces. Everyone joked that I plan on not liking my kids but doesn't everyone go through that phase? As long as I have two spaces I think I won't feel cramped.

We just moved in May so I don't know how many sf. It's big but not big enough for the 500 babies I want. Within the next 5 years were either tearing it down and starting over or building out and up. The backyard is giant and it's right by my parents and those 2 reasons outweigh the house size for now.

Over 3,000 and it's too much. Cleaning and taking care of a home this large takes up so much of my time.

We have just under 1,900 and I think it's perfect. None of the rooms are huge, but we have 3 BRs, 2 full baths, office, living room, open kitchen/dining and a family/playroom.

it's about 2500, and it's more than enough. we were living with LO in 1000 sq ft before this, and that was fine. we're hoping for a second, and while we'll still have too much space, i certain wasn't going to turn down the house based on that :). also i think it will be good when the kids are much older and want some space to themselves.

We're moving into our house in less than two weeks and it's 1800 sq ft. Ours right now is just a little less than that and prior to this house I had 2200 sq ft. 2200 was too big for two people, and since we're not having kids I think our new house will be perfect. We could have stayed in the house we're in right now but we really wanted a bonus room (and some other things).

It's about 2000sq ft + unfinished basement, attic, and 3 car garage. It is more space than we need but the space is not as usable as we would like. It is an old house with lots of small rooms and small closets. Also all the basement, attic, and garage space (we only have one car) means we are very quickly accumulating a lot of crap.

Our apartment is just under 1500sq ft. I really like the layout and we have something like 15ft ceilings in every room, so it feels bigger than it actually is. It works for our family of 4, but in my dream apartment we would have at least one more room to serve as my office/guest room.

We live in England where houses are notoriously small so our 1370 square feet feels huge to us! We have everything we need (four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a conservatory that doubles as a play room) and it feels perfect to us. We are currently planning an extension, which will add another 700 sq feet or so, but I'm sort of ambivalent as to whether or not we go ahead as I'm happy with what we have!

1,950. I'd love a bigger home, but this is just fine for 4 people.

Our house is 3900 sq. We have a game room, media room, study, and 5 bedrooms. We were looking for a 4 bedroom house, but we got a better deal with this one. We love the space because we were living in a cramped hotel room while the house was being built. We will turn one 1 into a home gym and leave the other two as guest bed rooms.

1400 and it is too big for just the two of us (plus two big dogs). We've lived here for almost six years and have an entire floor of the house, including full bath, that goes essentially unused except for a few weeks every summer when we have guests. Now that baby is on the way, we have rearranged our use of our space and we're very excited to start actually using the whole house. I think it will be perfect once we are a family of three.

3100 sq ft + 1700 finished basement. It's a lot of wasted space, honestly. We miss the days when we lived in under 1000 sq ft and talk about how we were determined to make it work with a child in that space, because we used to be so good at a minimalist lifestyle whereas having more space just makes us packrats now.

The whole house is 2,400 square feet but we rent out the basement so we live in about 1,500 sq ft. I love the size of the rooms, I just wish it there were 3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 down instead of the actual 2 up and 2 down. As a result we don't have a guest room and the boys will have to share a room for several years but that's ok.

Something made me think of the Make Me Move website (you list what you would sell your house for if someone offered) the other day and I realized I couldn't put a price on it. Our house suits our needs really well for the most part without giving us TOO much room to grow (stuff wise).

1800 sq ft. It's adequate space, but I really dislike the entire layout. It was perfect with just us, but with our LO I would like a play room, the master on the main, and a more open design downstairs. I would also love an extra bedroom to make into a study because my husband's work stuff is everywhere when he's home.

1900 sq ft with four bedrooms which is really awesome. We also have an eat-in kitchen and then a separate dining room which we hated off and turned into a playroom for LO. My wish list would be a three car garage (it's only two) because it's so cramped getting in and out of the cars when both are in there. And a laundry room.....currently the washer/dryer are in the garage.

The house we're renting is 1760, it's a great layout but way too small for our family of 5 (7 when my step-daughters are here every other weekend). The 4 girls share one small room, my son has his own, and our master is fair sized. The house we're looking at is almost 3700 sq ft and I think that would ideal for us, 3 stories, a dedicated playroom and media room. I'm tired of the toys!!!

3600 sq feet but I agree with many of you that it's not ideally arranged. There's only three bedrooms on our floor so the twins have to share. The other bedrooms are on the main floor or in the basement and until the kids are bigger they're just office for now. The kitchen is small and in the center of our house so we can't do much about it and we have a weird split level so we have way too many stairs for kids! DH and I say if we ever move we're building exactly what we want.

2000sqft. I love the layout, it's perfect as the bedrooms are on their on floor on the top. I really wish we had another 1000sqft ( well up to an extra 1000) for an extra bedroom and desperately a playroom. We have no play area as the basement is full of dh's music crap.

1500+unfinished basement for laundry & storage (hope to finish it for a studio & office) It utilizes the space well but I could do with another bedroom maybe. My MIL is moving in next month and it might feel a little cramped then.

Our current house is 1300sq ft. It's too small, no storage. We are going to be moving ince this is sold and it'll be about 2400sq ft, which will probably be too big haha but I'm most excited that we'll have a designated area for the kids toys/stuff since there will be a loft area

1400 square feet in NYC suburbs. It's pretty decent for our family of 3 (soon to be 4) plus dog-child, though I wouldn't mind more living/kitchen space. Would love to go up a bit, size-wise but nothing too large. The idea of accumulating a bunch of stuff in an overly large house honestly stresses me out.

@Ree723: I know right! I was reading this thread and thinking I can't even comprehend what 3000-4000 sq ft must look like! Our is just over 2000 sq ft and it's honestly one of the bigger houses I've ever been in, so can't imagine much bigger!

This is our 3rd house and it's almost 1900 sf (4 bedrooms/2.5 baths) plus a half finished basement (laundry/sauna/den/office) and a sun room. I love it! It's from the 60's but it's layed out perfect for us, has an acre of gated yard and is just 5 mins outside the city in a desired RM. We need to keep updating it but we'll be here for a long time

About 1500. It's good, but it really lacks storage space. We're trying to combat that by downsizing our crap and buying useful furniture.

About 900 square feet? It's actually great for us right now. Less to clean, fits us comfortably, and challenges me to not accumulate so much stuff.
