I'm pretty inbetween. Mine wasn't the first child on either side.

I think the attention was fine on my side of the family - it was an appropriate amount of support, encouragement and excitement but no one was ever rude or interfering.

On DH's side hardly anyone was involved. They didn't even act all that excited when we announced the news. They did send gifts, which was thoughtful, but other than that I felt irrelevant.

We got a good amount of attention from DH's family and my mom. My dad and stepmom significantly less, but they live across the country and aren't really a part of my life.

I was surprised by how much attention I got from DH's fam...E is their 5th grandchild (#7 for my mom and #11 for dad and stepmom). Both my MIL & FIL cried when we told them, and every time I saw them my brothers- and sisters-in-law would kiss my belly. The next youngest turned earlier this year, though, so I think they were ready for a new baby. And because we were team green they were all even more excited by the possibility that I might be carrying a much-coveted female McK.

@MungBean: ditto...I often joke that this is the most anticipated and well loved fetus on the planet. Lots of excited grandparents and aunts to be! We live close to both families and welcome the enthusiasm (and help, lol)

I hate to admit it but I hate the attention. All anyone at work talks to me about is the baby/pregnancy, and I feel like coworkers judge everything from my lunch to the heel height of my shoes. I was passed over for a promotion because the job starts during my maternity leave, and my boss definitely takes me less seriously. My MIL and FIL have smothered me the entire time and question every decision I make in regards to the baby. Now that I'm 5 weeks away his mom is annoying the shiz out of me with her incessant 'omg omg omg is that baby coming soon?' texts and phone calls and emails. I can handle the excitement from my parents and sister/BIL but everyone else pretty much annoys me. End confessional rant.

The coworkers I have told were unexpectedly THRILLED. It was the nicest surprise to have them so unbelievably happy for me. My family on the other hand who I expected to be over the moon with excitement was just meh...we told the extended family this weekend and they were like that's nice, you need a bigger house. NOT the response I was expecting lol.
