Do you limit coffee, tea and caffeinated sodas?
Do you limit coffee, tea and caffeinated sodas?

I try to stick to one caffinated drink per day (usually iced tea or coke... I'm not coffee drinker). Sometimes it's zero and every now and then it's 2. Even if I have 2 I usually don't get over 100mg of caffeine (a can of regular coke only has 35mg) and the suggested daily limit is 200mg so I don't stress myself out over it.

not really. I don't drink much soda to begin with (and don't drink tea). at my 8 week appt, the NP said to limit myself to 150 mg a day of caffeine. She told me that the March of Dimes recommends 300 mg a day, and that by aiming lower I wouldn't worry myself if I went over. If that makes any sense? lol.
I drink a medium coffee per day, I'd guess?

I'd usually have a Diet Coke or an iced skinny caramel macchiato. And didn't really limit my chocolate, since my overall caffeine intake wasn't that high. It's not hard staying under the recommended amount of caffeine if you aren't living on coffee and chocolate.

First tri I wanted nothing to do with coffee, so I didn't have any caffeine. Now I have one cup of coffee in the morning.

I really tried to limit it during the first trimester, but since then I don't really pay attention. Some days I don't have any caffeine and all and some days I might have more than the recommended amount. I hope it just balances out.

none, only hot chocolate and chocolate candy. But i had no soda, coffee or tea. Considering that different doctors have different perspectives on how much caffeine is "safe" I just avoided it all together

I limit myself to one Diet Coke a day. Then all I drink is water the rest of the day.

I don't really drink soda to begin with, so I just had my normal cup of coffee every morning. I lost interest in hot coffee in the summer and just had water on my morning commute.
If I didn't get my caffeine in the morning, I'd get a terrible headache, so I'd rather the coffee than Tylenol every day.

I drink virtually no coffee, tea, or soda, but that's the norm for me anyway. Caffeine sneaks in thanks to my chocolate problem!

Like @mrsbells I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've drank no caffeinated soda, tea or coffee. I've had a few decaf's hear and there which I know have some traces of caffeine, and I've had chocolate/hot chocolate.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I had none during the first trimester. Now I have one decaf coffee or green tea when I feel like it...probably once a week. I really notice it dehydrates me.
grapefruit / 4669 posts
I only had a few (less than 5?) sodas during the first trimester, but now I'm up to probably 5 sodas/coffees a week. I was just thinking that I need to cut back. The caffeine doesn't really concern me, but sodas have so many empty calories/sugar I figure it should be more of a treat than an everyday thing.
But yumm, Dr. Pepper...
Also, I'm not an everyday coffee person but I do love a good latte. I don't get those frequently enough to feel the need to limit my intake, though.

I don't drink any unless I am at a restaurant & then I allow myself a treat & have a diet coke if they have coke products or an iced tea. I figure I eat my caffeine with my chocolate consumption ;P
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Not really. I think about what 200 mg would be and stay under that. Coffee upset my first stomach in the first tri and it's just now starting to sound ok. I've had green tea and soda once in awhile. I don't think small amounts of caffeine are any worse for you than sugar or unhealthy things, anyways. Unless i'm drinking double shot ventis and more than two sodas a day, I'm well under the limit

I don't allow myself any caffeinated beverages (caffeine-free Coke is a treat I allow myself every once in awhile). I do eat chocolate every so often, but caffeine tends to give me a headache these days, so I usually just avoid it.

1/2 cup of coffee per day now (third trimester). I had none in the first trimester.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
None, just a hot chocolate every once in a while. I've always been extremely sensitive to caffeine so I figure it is better for me to abstain during pregnancy.

The farther into my pregnancy, the more lax I have gotten with this. I was super strict about it in the first tri, I basically drank zero caffeine. Second tri I started drinking my beloved Korean instant coffee again (Maxim Mocha Gold!) that DH brought home for me from working overseas...And I also would have tea at lunch.
Third tri I haven't paid nearly the same attention to it. If I want tea, I've drank tea. If I wanted a Diet Dr Pepper, I drank it. But I still drink 80% water.

I had none the minute I found out I was pregnant. After giving birth, I now have one or two sodas a day, since you are supposed to limit caffeine while breastfeeding.
pomegranate / 3398 posts
I have none except what's in the minimal amt of chocolate I eat/drink.
I stopped smoking and caffeine both pregnancies before. I just know caffeine is not good and I won't ingest it while pregnant.

I would have up to 2 cups of coffee per day. I have narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness), so prior to getting pregnant, I was on medication to keep me awake during the day. I couldn't take that medication while pregnant so I had to resort to coffee or tea to keep me awake while at work. It was the lesser of two evils (caffeine vs. methamphetamines)...
hostess / eggplant / 11068 posts
I allowed a mug of coffee every morning and a treat of some Coke every now and then.
grapefruit / 4056 posts
I went back to 1 cup of coffee and 1 coke a day in my first tri, then once that was over I stopped limiting. In NICU we put caffeine in the IV's of extreme preemie babies to help them breathe, so I don't worry about it.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Yeah, I'm a huge coffee drinker so I really had to limit my caffeine intake. I cut out caffeine cold turkey during the first trimester (literally thought I was dying!) and then allowed myself one cup of coffee in the AM.

I'll have a decaf coffee maybe 1-2 times per week. I don't drink sodas, but I'll have a glass or two of iced tea if we go out for dinner!

@MsMini: You always make me feel better with your official medical knowledge:)

@jholler25: Your welcome! Sometimes being a nurse makes you a lot less cautious than you might otherwise be. I figure stressing about drinking coffee is worse for the baby than actually doing it (LOL)!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I had a cup of Joe a day and some chocolate. Also an occasional diet coke.
pear / 1879 posts
During the first trimester I had virtually none, as coffee was about the least appealing thing to me ever! After that, when I was feeling a bit better, I have tended to have about 1/2 to 1 cup of coffee or a soda a day, plus a little bit of chocolate some days. I tend to get a small coffee but not drink most of it. My original OB was anti-diet soda (which has been hard for me!) so once in a while I will have a Coke instead. I'm afraid I won't be able to go back to diet after the baby comes!
pomelo / 5321 posts
I drank water 95% of the time while I was pregnant. I would allow myself to get a sweet tea or coke/diet coke when I went out to eat, but I didn't always. If I wanted coffee, I would just get decaf.

I started out continuing my one cup a day, but I couldn't get past a couple sips of coffee so I stopped for a while. Now at 37 weeks pregnant for the last couple weeks I have had a frappacino from Starbucks a few times a week and take sips of hubby's diet cokes and occasionally have my own reg coke.
squash / 13764 posts
I cut down in the first trimester, but now have a cup of coffee or a 2 shot latte 3-4 times a week .That's usually all the caffeine I'll have for the day.
persimmon / 1035 posts
when i found out i was pregnant, i looked up the caffeine content in everything i typically have with caffeine (coffee, tea, pepsi, and chocolate), and now i am conscious to always stay under 200mg a day. which usually means one coffee and something else. And i switched to non-caffeinated soda at home just to be sure i don't have too much accidentally. so it's ginger and sprite for now and i only have pepsi when i go to a restaurant on occasion.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
after researching, i don't stress too much about it. i cut back to practically nothing in the first trimester. now i have sweet tea pretty much whenever i want. there's very little caffeine (about 30mg) in a glass of black tea, so a couple of glasses every few days doesn't worry me. i used to love pepsi, but i can't stomach it much these days... i pretty much only drink tea and water now.
bananas / 9973 posts
I am a big iced-tea drinker and I tried to quit cold turkey after I found out I as preggers. It was just too hard and I had terrible migraines in the first trimester. Dr. OK'd one cup a day, so I'll try to limit myself to 1 a day (sometimes 2, but somedays none).
