I bought ours off craigslist from a family that was downsizing. I paid $600, and it was close to $2000 new. It's from The World Market Lugano table with 4 chairs and a bench.

$40! Craigslist, solid oak mid century. Round with 4 solid oak chairs. However, I am looking for more seating and it seems to be anywhere from $500 (local reclaimed barnwood table by local carpenter) to $1000 for the new or vintage tables I am interested in. Chairs are anywhere from $500 (for 4) to $2000.

We have a formal dining set that the ILS gave us with a table, 8 wooden upholstered chairs, a buffet, and china cabinet for $10,000.

wow! I'm surprised at the high numbers. Ours isn't amazing but it was $40 on CL for a table and 4 chairs in great condition. If I were to replace it, I would look for under $250 Even my living room set was $2000 I can't imagine spending that much on dining sets but that's just me haha I'm really frugal.

@dreamocracy: we don't even have a living room set. We bought our couch on Craigslist. I *do* have a nice chair that is expensive.....but it was a debacle with the store getting it in, so we ended up getting it for free in the end.
Anyway, I feel pretty justified in just getting these (if they are nice in person) and am going tonight to take a look at them.
I think I started this thread because I sometimes feel underappreciated with how little I can spend and still make things look nice. My husband has no concept of how much the average person spends on furniture and doesn't appreciate the effort I put into scouring Craigslist for months--months! for good deals.
We have an awesome couch that looks nice that we bought used. Our barstools are used. The glider chair ended up being free. Our bookshelves and liquor cabinet were salvaged from the street (people were throwing them away).
The way we live, you'd think we're destitute. And we are not. So I guess I just want him to say like, Wow, you are really great at decorating on a budget! haha. And instead he's like....$500 for a beautiful set of tables and designer upholstered chairs--don't you think that's a little expensive?"
Oh, Men. He thinks nothing of buying a new $900 lens for his camera though! Or buying a gigantic TV. Or a playstation. or a Macbook. Basically, if it isn't electronic, he doen't understand why it's more than $12.

Like $200! Craigslist
DH and I buy a lot of solid wood furniture off CL and refinish it.

@Anagram: I totally know how you feel. Except kind of the opposite...our ILs/parents are always like "you have it much nicer than we had at your age!" when really I just spend a ton of time to get good deals on things!
We got a great solid oak table with 6 (8? I forget - we only keep four around it) chairs and a leaf at a consignment store for $600. It isn't 100% what I would've gotten, but it looks great in our kitchen and much nicer than the 2 person table we had for years!

Our table and chairs were $1,800. It's a counter height table with built in wine shelving underneath. It came with 6 chairs that are also counter height.
@Anagram: That sounds like a great deal! Hopefully the set is just as nice in person.

Ours is round and only seats four but I think it was between 250 and 300. We don't love the chairs but it's good to fit into smaller rentals and the round shape is great for our daredevil, clumsy lo! Got it from a mom n pop type store... and that price includes delivery within a couple hours!
