If I remember correctly, the fee to take the pictures wasn't too much, but buying the prints was a lot of money. I think for DD it was like $100 for taking the pictures, but then a 4x6 or 5x7 picture was $20 a print, and it went up from there...
With DS it was more up front, but she gave us digital copies of all the pictures and I could print them off of shutterfly.
These were two different photographers though. If I were you, I would look for one who gives you the digital prints so you can print your own pictures. I feel like that's where I spend the most money (buying the prints)

We didn't hire anyone (actually we have zero professional photos of us as a family), and I wish we had better photos. We're usually the ones behind the camera and act as photographer for all family get togethers. It's sad when we have such nice photos of all other events except our own kid's birthday.

Can't say, I'm doing them myself. But I'm pretty sure in our area mini sessions (30 min) are usually around $100-150, and if it were someone who isn't established, I would probably think you could get away with $50-75.

@wheres_c: depends how long you want the shoot to be. I would say $100 min is a decent offer. For reference a local photographer is doing 20-min fall mini sessions and its $125. I have seen those for about $75 too.

I found a girl on CL - checked out her website and spoke with her - she was just starting out so I paid $125 for a 2 hour session at a park and got ALL the pics on a CD!

This was 4 yrs ago and she now charges $150 for the session plus $250 print min - yikes!!!
