I'm due in January so we won't have met our deductible. And we are switching plans. Our new insurance covers 75% I think. I'm trying to figure out how much to save.
How much did you pay out of pocket when it was all said and done?

Our deductible was $2000 and then everything was covered. We had to pay the full $2000 by 20 weeks I think, and then we were done paying.

$7000 - our out of pocket max, for my traumatic birth and her week in the nicu. As a bonus, we had a health savings account with a lot of money in it, but we had a really hard time accessing it for various reasons, so several of our hospital bills went to collections while it was all processing. Really, really infuriating, especially since we had specifically saved money for our birth, but were just held up in getting it.
Another annoying thing that our hospital did was to not bill us at all before the birth. I was eager to pay copays and such as I went along to spread it out, but they said that they didn't do it that way. So we just get this huge bill afterwards, when we'd be in their care for six months. Next time I'm hoping to arrange something different.
I had an unusually frustrating experience, I think. This is not standard.

deductible was $500! so cheap!
this time around insurance only covers 80% so.. I'm guessing it'll cost 3-4k

I'm Canadian so it cost me a whopping $24 for my semi-private room in postpartum. They tried to charge me for two days instead of one and I wigged out- I can't imagine paying hundreds or thousands of dollars!

$117 dollars-- I got a bill from the hospital for our private room. I was totally pissed because I didn't know there was a cost for our room, they don't have any other options than private rooms. #canadianproblems

$600 - 3 nights in the hospital at $200 deductible per night.
The bill we saw from the hospital was about $16k for a vaginal twin birth, plus some assorted specialist bills for a few hundred here and there, all paid by insurance.

@prettylizy: In Alberta (not sure what province you're in) if they only had privates available they actually aren't allowed to charge you for the room. I'd go cray-cray on the provincial healthcare accounts person for that!

My insurance said that everything was covered 90%; but it definitely seemed like some things were not really covered under that system and/or didn’t count towards my $1500 “max out of pocket” (yeah, right!). After LO’s birth, we got a bill from the OB which was a few hundred, a bill from the pediatric heart specialist for LO, which was a couple hundred and a bill from the hospital which was around $2300. My insurance was billed almost 25k for my c-section, 4 day stay in the hospital and LO’s stay in the hospital.

@JessicaMcB: @prettylizy: I'm eight hours from Calgary. Maybe I should make the trip??
I've saved $2500...hopefully I can save 5k before the birth? Hopefully that will be enough?

Deductible was $1000, then insurance paid 80%. After the deductible, we paid $1200 I think for hospital fees. Also, we paid $700 for the hospital pediatrician since DS has his own $1000 deductible. Blerg

@JessicaMcB: I'm in Ontario. At my hospital there are only (as far as I know) private labour/delivery/recovery rooms. Though I would totally pay for the private if I had the option, I wasn't asked and I just got a bill.

we have a high deductible plan so we'll be paying $4500 OOP. fortunately we have an HSA to use that stinks about the switch & the timing though, hope your new plan keeps your costs low!

I stayed 4 nights, I was induced and then had a c-section I paid $1200 out of a total of over $21,000

DH paid $74 to stay with me for 2 nights, which included breakfast and dinner. I vaguely remember a bill for around $30 but it might not be delivery related. So basically free. I live in Sweden, we pay through taxes.

$0. Absolutely nothing for a standard delivery with an epidural, one to one midwife care throughout labour and delivery, and two nights hospital stay in a semi private room. I love Australia's socialised health care system! No deductibles, no insurance claims, no co-pays, no out of pocket expenses at all...and we delivered at one of the best hospitals in Australia.

$0 for everything including my sons 10
Day stay in the NICU. We have an HMO.

I met with the billing department at my midwife's office this week and based on their estimate of what we will meet toward our deductible by June of next year they want us to pre-pay $1,000 by April.
So at the worst it will be $1,000, but we could end up getting some of that back I guess.

I think we'll end up paying about $1000. Our deductible is $2400, but we've already met the majority of that. After the deductible, everything is covered 100%.
pineapple / 12234 posts
$1000 deductible, 90% covered after that and $4500 max out of pocket.
$1500 total. I was SO worried about it all pregnancy long.

We chose our health insurance plan when I was 20 weeks pregnant, so we intentionally chose the lowest out of pocket options available. We had a $300 deductible and then 90% coverage after that with a $1500 max out of pocket. We ended up paying the full $1500.

@JessicaMcB: Good to know! I am in cowtown as well, just... no baby yet.

$0! DH's awesome insurance changes at the end of this year...not sure how much we will have to pay for our next LO!
persimmon / 1388 posts
My deductible is $4K, which is also my out-of-pocket max. So, that's what we'll be paying at the very minimum :-\ Booooo. We're trying to time getting pregnant so that the pregnancy falls within 1 deductible (calendar) year. Keep your fingers crossed for me

Hmm I need to find a copy of this plan to see what our max out of pocket is.
I should've titled this "American bees: what did you pay?" It's crazy how much it varies country to country!

We had a $250 copay and I used my FSA to pay for it. I love our insurance. They cover so much and we have $0 deductible.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
No copay or deductible, we don't have one its all 100% covered, I'm still under my dads health insurance until I'm 26 and he has really great coverage, so I got lucky.

@JessicaMcB: omggggg so jealous!!
we have crappy insurance. We paid several thousand out of pocket.
I think we were billed for somewhere between 7k-9k but after insurance we paid maybe 3k?
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
total, $270: $20 co-pay for first prenatal visit & $250 co-pay for delivery.
pomelo / 5321 posts
$0. We have insurance under the military and everything was fully covered.
pomegranate / 3643 posts
So it looks like our max out of pocket is $5,000. I'm guessing I can just go ahead and budget for that? I tried to call our hospital today to get an idea of what they charge. I will try calling the new insurance tomorrow to see if they can explain it to me...I wonder how helpful they will be since I'm not a customer yet?
Also...you know how it's always a nightmare when you switch insurance plans and they take forever to send you your cards? I can't believe I'm gonna have to deal with that with our birth!!

Well, I had to add maternity coverage, so I count that. I spent about $2200 for that add on. Then, because I had a scheduled c section, I also had to pay my deductible, which was another $2200. If I had had a vaginal birth. it would have ended at just the maternity coverage. Then there was $150 for my room, $50/ each for 3 ultrasounds and a one time $35 copay. So I ended up just under $5K. The insurance paid the hospital $26,000, though.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
including the few lab fees i've paid, plus the $250 L&D estimate we got at the beginning, i think we're looking at around $300 total out of pocket.
pomelo / 5628 posts
ZERO including my 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital and LO's 3 1/2 months in the NICU. I have an HMO plan.
