If you don't mind answering, how much is your electric bill? I know there are many variables but I am just trying to get an average. We live in a 700 square foot apartment now and it is about $40 a month. We are moving into a 2600 square foot home and I am SO nervous about what the change will be. We are pretty strict with leaving things on, so I know we won't overdo it. I am a huge budget person and I am trying to get some ideas in my head now.

Depends on the season. We're in Texas, so it's much cheaper now than it is in the summer. Our house is 2200 sq ft. and for the past few months it has been in the $80 range. In the summer it's closer to the $130-140 range.

It fluctuates between $60-$140, highest in summer. When electric bill is low though, our gas bill gets higher and it fluctuates inversely $15-60. 1750 SF House.

for the year it averages $75/month for our apartment. we have electric appliances, a gas hot water heater & gas heat so those don't use much, and run our central air in the summer which makes it go up.

For 1800 older home, we pay about $80 on the months we don't use the air/heat much and up to about $150 in the winter/summer. I should add we don't have anything gas, all electric appliances.

$84.86 last month.
We're usually $60 or so in summer. 1470 sq ft newer home.
We have time of use billing and that makes a huge difference on bill too.

We just replaced our A/C with a more energy efficient unit and our bill went from $180/mo to $115/mo on average. We run our A/C all the time.

@mrs. bird: it costs more to use electricity during certain times of day! We have On Peak, Mid Peak and Off Peak.
Off peak is 7pm to 6am and all weekend, so we do our laundry, run dishwasher, etc in those hours, but with me home on mat leave, hard to get around some usage on peak (like heat down during day) when I'm at work!
It's insane the cost to use on peak versus off peak! Well worth it to use in off peak times.

Absolutely everything in our house -1200 sf rancher & finished basement- is electric so it varies from $70 mo in fall and spring to $275 in the winter. It's a huge variance so it's not very helpful!
Do you live in a state with deregulated electricity? If you do, You can shop for an electric provider.

@Bao: 2600sf house - $120/mo. We keep it at 68 give or take a degree in the winter with the baby here. We have dual zone heating and a/c .

2800 sf home, 2 of us. Summers with AC about 180. Winters with space heaters about 160. Spring/Fall 80.

We have a ~1600 sq foot townhouse in MA, gas heat/hot water/oven/dryer, use a ton of AC in the summer, and our balanced bill is $86/month.

@Bao: it's something the Ontario government rolled out, not an option. They install 'smart meters' to track how much power you use at what time of day. The idea was to try and promote spreading the use of electricity over less busy hours.

@Bao: Yup, exactly! I like the consistency of knowing what to expect. I was afraid when I first moved into my house that I'd be hit with crazy high bills in the summer, because I really like and need AC (heat affects my asthma, allergies and migraines).

@MrsCB: So I am guessing for us, when we move in, if we went with the budget option it would be based off the previous owners use, will it eventually adjust if we use less?

@Bao: I'm not sure what they base it on, I bought a brand new house with no history. You might be able to call and ask. But either way they should definitely adjust the bill based on usage. Our electric bill is oddly consistent, I think for as long as we've lived here (almost 3 years) it's been $86. But we have the same type of billing for our heat and every 3-6 months they update the cost. It's ranged from $24-56/month.

@Bao: deregulated electricity means you can choose from a bunch of electric companies, not just one.
Some US electric companies have time of use billing too.

Ours is $140-$160 a month for our 1500 sq ft home. We always have the heat/air on.

We have ours on a budget. The electric company averaged the year and charges us last years average for this year. At the beginning of the year they will adjust it up or down. It was 58/month for the year but now that costs are rising & DH is home more we now pay 80/month. He is horrible about leaving lights on! We have an 1800sqft 113yr old bungalow.

@Sugar.Biscuit: That still doesn't seem too bad, especially for that old of a house! I am really leaning towards the budget plan now, hearing from you bees. I have to know what to expect...I am not good at "going with the flow" lol...

@Bao: also our electric company suggests you live there for a year before going on budget. Because the previous owners budget and lifestyle was similar to mine they did the budget anyways. I would hate for you to be paying in more than necessary or end up owning a lot at the end of year. Lifestyle has a big factor in usage.

Ours is around $60 a month, goes up to around $100 at the most expensive months. But we have all electric, heat, appliances, a/c, so it's most expensive in the winter when we run the heater more. We are also on the ground floor, so we use the a/c like, 4 times a year since it stays so cool in here all summer. We are in an 850 sq ft 1 bedroom, and we are really good about turning the heat/ac off when we are out and at night, and tend to keep it a little cooler than most people.

Ours is about $100-$120 every two months. Our house is about 1600 sq. ft. and we're pretty diligent about turning things off!
