Lately I seem to be getting shower invitations with only a week or two until the actual event. Many of my friends live in other cities and I need more than a couple of weeks notice if I have to go out of town on a weekend! Agh.
What has been your experience with this?

That seems to be a fairly short notice. The invites I've received have been at least a month in advance.

Yeah I think a month is best to give people time to make arrangements.

I received an invite on Saturday, and the shower was the following Sunday.
I like to send them out 4-6 weeks in advance.

I agree with PP on a month. Mine didn't go out till 2 weeks even though I thought they should have gone out earlier. Oh well, I told the OOT earlier by word of mouth.

I think I might have to break etiquette and prepare my own invitations so I guarantee they go out on time ha!

when i've hosted showers, the invites went out 4 weeks before. a week or two doesn't give people much time to find sitters/switch work schedules/make travel plans etc.

I've always been taught invitations should go out 4-6 weeks before the event. My showers are July 14 and 15 and the invitations went out Monday I believe for the one on the 15th..not sure about the other shower. My SIL is throwing it and I'm not sure if she mailed them and just didn't send me one since I already know when/where and all that or if she just hasn't sent them.
ETA: Now that I think about it I know she hasn't seen them because my mom's on that guest list and she hasn't gotten one either.

I like to give at least a month notice. But we're throwing a shower for my sil and she didn't have all of the info for me in time. She didn't know if they could get the venue she wanted (she knows the people there so she wanted to be the one to deal with that) and if they'd have a big enough space. I'm a planner and like to do everything way ahead of time, bit luckily her friend offered to do invites. I would have pitched a fit waiting so long.

I'm pretty sure my mom sent mine out about 8 weeks ahead, and I thought that was really early. But on the flip side, I like to get invitations ahead of time - gives me more time to plan to be there and get first dibs at the registry
