We all know babies are teething ALL THE TIME. So when do you give them Tylenol? When you see the initial signs of teeth cutting? After the tooth/teeth have started to cut through? For how many days will you give your LO Tylenol?

This time around has been the only time we've offered Tylenol. She's in obvious discomfort, very fussy, whiney and crying for no reason. We think she's cutting 2 uppers and 2 back molars at the same time!

We only offer it if he's especially fussy. Usually, the teething tablets seem to offer some comfort, enough to help him sleep.

his teeth usually only seem to bother him at night. we only give it to him if he wakes up and is obviously in discomfort.

I can't really remember with Wagon Jr., just that we gave tylenol all the time. And motrin all the time later on. My kids teethed so early. But once they're a little older and it's not their first few teeth, they do get a little more used to the feeling and pain.
With LMW she popped her first tooth at 3 months. and FOUR AT ONCE. So needless to say she was a mess before the tooth made its appearance. We did everything-- tylenol, teething tablets, orajel naturals, and finally camilia boiron because I was sick of pumping her full of tylenol every night. Honestly, with that amount of pain I don't think anything really helped to the point where she was actually comfortable.

@mrs. wagon: what is camilia boiron? I am really not comfortable with using this much Tylenol right now and need to stop and pick up ibuprofen.
ETA: did you find it more effective?

@regberadaisy: ibuprofen is definitely safer since it doesn't go thru the liver! but camilia boiron is a homeopathic pain remedy... I'm not usually into homeopathic stuff too much, but since she was younger than 6 months I didn't have a choice if I didn't want the tylenol all the time. I found some in my CVS but you can also order off amazon. It's all natural and supposedly totally safe. It comes in these little single-serving squeeze tubes which is super convenient. I have no idea if it really worked. But it was nice to try it and not do the tylenol every night.

Our ped sent this to us:
Fever + Irritable/Pain = Give Tylenol or Advil
Fever + Happy = Do not give Tylenol or Advil
No Fever + Happy = Do not give Tylenol or Advil
No Fever + Irritable/Pain = Give Tylenol or Advil
"You’ll notice from the above that fever is not the important variable when making the decision. Tylenol/Advil is really only for symptom control. So the only thing to remember is:
Irritable/Pain = Give Tylenol or Advil
This means that it is not necessary to bring an otherwise happy child’s fever down. Fever, in the vast majority of these cases, is the normal bodily response to infection. The infection might be dangerous (which is why you may choose to bring your child in to see the doctor) but the fever, per se, is not cause for concern and does not require aggressive treatment."

@mrs. wagon: ugh I did not know that about acetaminophen vs ibuprofen! I don't like acetaminophen bc of the asthma risk! But for some reason DH keeps buying acetaminophen!!!
@Rubies: that's us. We only give ibuprofen when fever is above 102 and/or she is irritable and in pain which has been the last 3 days. Her sleep is affected; hourly wake ups!

I did not know that tylenol goes throught the liver and motrin does not!
After 6mo we started doing motin when he was unhappy/fussy and clearly in pain. I don't typically dose during the day if I can distract him.
We follow the guide that @Rubies posted and has always seemed to work for us.
