As long as possible. We only had about 2-3 different cars my entire life.

My dad seems to buy a new one every year. He has 5 right now for just him and my mom. Crazy!

LOL, every 20 years or so! They always buy used, the last time was 1999. Before that it a 1972 VW bus and a 1986 VW vanagon.
On the other hand my IL's buy a new car every 2-3 years.
Very different philosophies!

They kept them until they were breaking down. I still have my first car from 2002, dh drives it.

My dad likes to buy them at least every 5 years.
Now, with his job, he has to have a standard of how new they are, so he has to replace them to get a car allowance.

Whenever they broke, and they were always used. Right now they are driving a 1993 Crown Vic and a 2003 Camry. That Vic has been through a lot: my cousin learned to drive in it and sideswiped a telephone pole, I learned to drive in it and backed it into a house (dented the downspout) and my mom backed it into a mailbox. That thing is still going strong.

Maybe every 10 years? I remember though that my parents bought a Honda Civic when I was 5 and my dad drove it until it died when I was 30!

My mom had the same van for 15 years. She only got rid of it when it was completely dead, which was only a couple years ago.

@autumnlove: haha, my parents kept our Chevy Lumina for 19 years. It was my first car at 16 yo and mine when I moved to Chicago after graduation. I hated it during my teen years but began to appreciate the dorky bullet van at 22. My friends all loved it for moving and buying furniture. (Parallel parking it in Lakeview was def a challenge though)
My mom got a new car after maybe 8 years, but the van was just an extra back up car for my sisters and I to use.
My dad had a new company car every 2 years

I'd say every 5 years, my dad is impatient. My mom drives hers until they die though! I plan on doing the same unless we somehow become independently wealthy

Every 5ish years. I remember my dad having 4 different cars.. An Olds, a Dodge Caravan, Ford Expedition, Ford Freestyle. My mom had four as well..can't remember the first, then it was Volvo wagon #1, Volvo wagon #2, Mercedes sedan.
So far we trade ours in every 5 as well. I love cars!!! I'm already dreaming of my next one

Not very often.until recently they still had the 1992 Volvo station wagon we grew up with! (they have another one of those too lol)

I can pretty much name them all since I was born. My dad did mechanical stuff for a living, so he could be counted on to make our cars run into the ground... Like 200,000 plus miles. My 4runner currently has 200,000 and is still going strong!

The only new cars my parents purchased were prior to my birth. My parents always drove company cars and purchased their favs for extended use.

Until they die. I know all 4 cars my parents had until I was 17 (2 each).

As long as possible! Their current cars are 20 and 14 years old.

@Mrs. J: we had two Volvo wagons in a row as well. One ended up being mine for a couple years; I still miss it!

They've had three vehicles since I was born. My dad just sold his antique, busted Mercedes diesel for a newer truck after years of driving around without any seat but the drivers. They're very frugal - I didn't know that people took out loans for cars until I was in college!

Both my parents have had their current cars for 14 years. They don't value cars that much.

I'm 27, and I have only seen my parents ever own two cars in my lifetime. The conversion van lasted for at least 15 years, and their current Xterra is 11 years old.

We never owned a new car when I was growing up. My parents always bought used and usually not in great condition. We had a lot of cars...

My dad always had company cars whih were 3year leases. Our actual personal vehicle we had a 1980 Toyota tercel until 1996 and then my parents bought out my dads company car (1991 Plymouth voyager) for a short overlap period and we kept that until at least 2002. After that my dad became self employed and needed a newish car since he's a realtor driving people around he can't have a junker so there's been a few leases that I don't really remember since I don't live there anymore and they just share it.
