E wakes up every 2 hours sometimes and I'm wondering if I really need to change her/check her every time she wakes. I don't think I'd get any sleep if I had to change and feed her every two hours. How often do you change your newborns diaper in the middle of the night? Obviously if it's poop it would be as needed.

We changed when wet until about six weeks. Now we just change once.

At that age every feeding because there was always poop. Right around 6 weeks he stopped pooping as frequently and we'd do one motn change during a feeding. At 8 weeks he started pooping only once every few days, so I wouldn't change him at night.

Do you have the wetness indicator diapers? I only changed her if the line was all the way blue.

Just with poop, I think. No way was I unswaddling, etc. multiple times a night. He never had a rash that young or I would have done it more often. We never had any problems.

If he was up a lot I would change every other. Around 6 wks started putting him in baby dry and only changing him if there was a poo.

@photojane: yes, it's just the whole unswaddling/undoing jammies, getting enough light to see etc that's a pain to get to the line

@Bao: ahhhh! haha... not lazy! I totally get it. Maybe just try it tonight. Skip a changing, and see how she does. If it doesn't wake her, and she's not leaking through, then you've got your answer.

@Bao: Not lazy! It is stimulating and disruptive to their sleep to change all the time. I wouldn't change every time - around 2-3 weeks my LO was doing a 5-6 hr stretch sometimes. If yours did that, you wouldn't wake to change! So I'd say, maybe every other or every 3rd change if it is just pee! Can you smell the poop so you don't have to unswaddle?

I did it at every waking until about 2.5 months because I was terrified of her being too sleepy to eat as much as she needed to eat & I wanted to make sure she was awake enough for a full meal....it's a pain in the ass though; I definitely wouldn't do it that way again

@Bao: PS: Sadie was FF, so I only woke her to eat every 4-5 hours -- so, I'm assuming E could go at least that long.

Whenever there is poop when he wakes up to nurse. Which is always.

we changed her every time she woke up. she hated being wet and i didn't want her waking up just because of wetness.

Every time we got up with him to eat, we changed him. Still do at 4 months.

At that age I check and change every time she got up to feed. I unswaddle her when she feeds so figure minus well check too.

I changed at each wake up, but lo wasn't swaddled which made it easier!

We changed her before every feeding, so approximately every 2 hours. She hated being wet and let us know.

Only if she pooped after eating, but for the first 4-5 months, that was pretty much every feed! Or, if she was awake for an extended period of time.

He gets really uptight when he's either pooped or done a solid wet nappy so we usually do a half-feed and then change if he's fussing. I'd say we never went longer than four hours.

We changed before every feeding. Dd has very sensitive skin and gets diaper rash very easily.

I changed every time before a feeding until about 4 weeks, but now I'll give her a 4 hour stretch and skip one if she's waking up for a "snack" at 2 hours but is pretty much still asleep. She hates being wet, and like you said, we can hear her poop, so she lets us know when she for sure needs to be changed.

At every wakeup for the first 3 weeks. She started sleeping better when I stopped changing her at night.

I think I changed every time she woke up and I fed her too. Until she started STTN or dream-feeding.

With my son, every time he woke. With my daughter, I stopped changing her at night around 3 weeks because she wouldn't pee until about 4am, so I would just wait until morning!

We just got home from the hospital yesterday, but we've been changing his diaper before every feeding (between 2-3 hours) to wake him. But he's less than a week old and we still need to document his feedings/diapers so I'm sure that will be changing when he gets older!

First month every time she woke up till she stopped pooping so much.

We changed her every time she woke in the night before feeding her. Though at the most this was only 3x.

As a newborn, we changed at every wake up. But Hubs and I were a team - he'd change the diaper while I got myself ready to nurse.

I changed every single wake up because his diapers always leaked at night as a newborn. So he also needed his clothes changed every time for the first few weeks which made it even more fun.
maybe I'm lazy?
