I just went to my first yoga class in...awhile...and realized that I never used my own mat in the past. How often do you (and are you supposed to) wash them?

I have never washed mine! Last time I went to a yoga class (before LO was born), I do remember feeling slightly embarrassed at the state of it - a few coffee stains from early morning yoga and lots of claw marks where the cat used to join in!

Not that often because I always use my yogitoes towel over it, so I'm rarely directly using the mat! I wash it every 6 months. I just put it through the washer, and let it hang dry outside.

Wow ummm never? lol. I didn't ever really think about it. But I have always made sure I keep the same side up so I'm not getting floor germs on both sides. I guess it could probably use a spritz before I started back up again

yep --- never even thought to wash it. I'd wipe it down with a lysol wipe or something now that I know.

Thank you all for the answers (and honesty!). I guess I'll just wash it when it gets grimy...which, in direct contact with feet, hands, and face...and sweat (during a Flow class) may be pretty soon.
@Mrs. High Heels: Does the towel allow enough "grip"? If so, that seems like a great solution!

Hmm...really really rarely! I wipe them down with the wet wipes at the gym when I remember.

Once a month or so but I'm overdue for a new mat. My Gaiam mat never really cleans right? There are still stains from when I practiced outdoors over a year ago and they won't go away no matter what I try. My other mat cleans just fine but it's so worn out from a year and a half of practice.

@Mrs. High Heels: Cool! I will definitely check that out, then.

Okay, these are pretty amazing (if a bit expensive)! A couple of colors are currently 15% off!

@FliegepilzHut: Whoa that's more expensive than I remember, but I bought mine 8 years ago and it's still going strong. Think of it as a long term investment if you're really into yoga!
It's cheaper on Amazon! http://www.amazon.com/Yogitoes-Skidless-Groovy-Towel-Springburst/dp/B002TMYFWQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410281529&sr=8-2&keywords=yogitoes
