So maybe I am being a little judgemental due to the parent in this situation, but I just saw a picture on Facebook of a recent Kindergarten graduate being pushed in a stroller with her 10 month sister. Isn't that a little old to be pushing in a stroller, she's 6. It was for a nightly walk and I know for a fact that this little girl is a couch potato, so a nightly walk would be good for her. Am I being judgemental or is it time for the mom to kick the older one out of the stroller?

I can understand if it was a situation where having the stroller was more convenient for mom (ie going to the mall on Christmas Eve)... but putting a six year old in a stroller for a walk around the neighborhood seems really crazy to me.

I think its strange when I see big kids (like 4 or 5 or older) being pushed around in strollers. most of the time, their feet are dragging along the ground because they're too big for it! I can see putting them on a boogey board behind the stroller if you want to be able to push them along more easily/keep a hold of them.

I consider strollers one of those ginormous baby PITAs that should be avoided at all costs. I don't see why the mom didn't strap on the baby and just hold the girl's hand. Hasn't she been able to walk for like five years?!

Specifically how old depends on the child/situation, but six, in my opinion, is too old for a typically developing child to be routinely pushed around in a stroller!

If its a casual walk around the neighborhood, yes its time to get some exercise.
I could understand if it was a jogging stroller and the mom was going a long distance though. My niece rides in a jogging stroller at the age of 5 when they do races (and I assume when they are training as needed).

I have no idea how old is too old. We're planning on getting a wagon for lo for if we go on a long walk when she's a little older.

LO stopped going in her stroller at 18 months so it is possible not use it forever and ever! We can't go on very long walks but it has been fine otherwise.

Hrmm, I remember being pushed around in one of those fold up strollers in Disney World when I was 5, does that count??

@MamaMoose: yes I can see out of convenience, the caption on the picture was "nice night for a walk with my girls" so it was definitely just a nightly stroll!

@marley: This is what irritates me the most was although she is not obese, she isn't a small girl. She's a family member & my sister watches this little girl a lot. She doesn't ever want to do ANY form of physical activity, she jsut wants to watch TV. I think these walks are the perfect time to get some form of exercise in!

Honestly, my feelings about other people's parenting is, "Not my kid, not my problem." There are a lot of things people do with their kids that I give the side-eye, but does it affect me? If not, I stay out of it.
Personally, I don't even plan on getting a two-kid stroller for my kids because this summer I'll have the new baby strapped to me, and next year my toddler will be 3.5, which I think is old enough for her to walk. And if we are going a long distance (a day at the zoo or whatever) she can ride in a wagon. BUT there are a million different situations and reasons why people do what they do, and I don't know their motivation, so I try not to judge. I think most people are genuinely doing the best they can.
I'm guessing in this instance, the mom doesn't get to take a walk unless she puts the kid in a stroller, so she puts the kid in a stroller. I don't know that that's the best solution to the problem, but I'm guessing that's the motivation.

Haha. I think it's okay with a 5 year old to sit in the stroller when s/he's been walking around a lot. Little legs get tired too!
I'd say not so much for a nightly walk though. -
I have wondered about this in the past, also. Living in NYC, I definitely feel like I see much older kids in strollers, which makes sense (to a point). Walking around the city with those little legs is probably exhausting! But on an everyday, we're just taking a stroll, basis, it seems kinda weird...

I went to visit family once, and while walking around the city they had their 8 year old in the stroller and their 4 year old on the boogie board behind it. Kind of awkward.

I think that age is too old in normal circumstances...
I went to my friend's engagement BBQ a few months ago and noticed that one of her friends was pushing her older kid (around 4 or 5) in a Chicco stroller. I asked my friend why that kid was getting spoiled like that...shouldn't he just walk? Ugh, turns out he was born with a lot of problems and cannot walk (or eat or speak) and his parents were planning to get him a wheelchair soon. I was so embarassed and wanted to crawl into a hole!!

I think that by 4 they should be walking, within reason of course. LO is only 11 months and is already starting to fight the stroller. I'm hoping I can keep him in for another year or so.

Well, in that particular instance, I can see how it's a little crazy, but as a nanny and now mom I can understand instances where I would put my preschooler/kindergardener in the stroller.
1. We're walking down the street with NO sidewalk. I would want my nanny kids/my kids safe, and the safest place would be me pushing them.
2. We're in a BUSY place, NYC, mall, etc - I don't want them getting lost.
But if it's a sidewalk neighborhood, I would have my son/nanny kid ride their bike, scooter, or walk.
