T is 3 next month and totally gave up his nap a month ago when we moved him to a bed. But I have been enforcing quiet time. Now he won't stay in his room for quiet time. He just runs out and thinks its hilarious. I calmly tell him it's rest time and bring him back to his room. Today he's persistent. I also have a 4 month old and don't have time for this crap. What should I do?

I'd love to hear any success stories, my son will not do a mandated rest time either, he'll sometimes go into his room and play for a bit, but not for anywhere near an hour.

@winniebee: We have these safety 1st doorknob covers, and they work great. He did freak out the first time I put it on, but he was climbing into our bed at 4am and jumping around, so I held firm, and now he doesn't care.

Maybe I'll do some sort of doorknob cover. His room is connected to his brother's so I'm sort of afraid he's going to scream and pound on the doors.....
I just told him that he could leave his room but no shows today if he did. He left his room so that's that. I have to actually prepare for a tax appt tomorrow so really can't have him bothering me.

We put the door knob covers on. He was starting to wander out of his room at night. He only complained the first day.

We also did door knob covers, but prepare for screaming. Maybe move the baby to your room until he gets used to it.

What does he do during quiet time? My friend only let's her kid use the iPad during quiet time (games). Is this something that would appeal to him?
I know that if I used door covers or locks there would be a ton of screaming/crying.

My nearly 2.5 yo can get every door knob cover I've tried off, but this is a latch at the top of the door. It's super easy to use for adults though and clicks closed when you close the door. It also leaves a crack in the door too so you can still hear/peek in and see what's going on. My only complaint is that it's kinda pricey. -
@Freckles: I'm not cool with iPad during quiet time Bc that's what I use when I need to deal with baby stuff while he's awake haha!
I'm thinking of a rewards chart? Bribery?

@winniebee: I promise iPad time after "rest time"
and/or going to the playground, etc. He used to stay up for rest time for over an hour but now I'm lucky if I get 40 mins!

We use door knob covers too. She protested at first, but now she just hollers into her monitor for me when she's done sleeping (or "sleeping") from her bed.

@winniebee: haha got it. What about trying a sticker/rewards chart. Each day he is quiet, he gets a sticker. Collect x number of stickers and he can get a reward of some sort. Does he respond well to those type of incentives?

Naps are getting slim around here at 3 years old. When we switched to the big boy bed I would watch him on the video monitor and loudly remind him to get back into bed. If he chooses not to sleep, he has to stay in his room for at least an hour and a half quietly.
For the most part he stays in bed and reads, but we also have a baby gate on his door to keep him contained (the cheap $10 tension type) he hasn't climbed it yet, but if he tried, I would just double them up, one on top of the other. They are light and if placed right, will lock into the door frame, works great for my monkeys!
and/or going to the playground, etc. Reply
