My sister wants to visit my dad in Florida during Thanksgiving. I priced out the rental car and the numbers look great. She has 5 in her family and it would just be me and LO. Would we do a 3 ways split (adults only) or 2 way split (by family).

I would just split 2 ways. For 3 ways, do you mean splitting between you, your sister and her husband? Or you, your sister and your dad? Either way, I don’t like those options. Either they are paying 75% which doesn’t seem fair, or your dad is paying 1/3 which really doesn’t seem fair.

Eh I'd just do it 2 ways even if it's obvious that you're paying more.

The ONLY way I'd not split it 50/50 is if it was a really important trip and you couldn't afford it otherwise. Then I'd probably split the cost of an economy car two ways, but ask her if she minded paying the cost to upgrade to a car large enough to hold everyone since her family is larger.
But I'd hesitate to do that. Unless that was the only way you could afford to go and it was REALLY important.

@yoursilverlining: It would be by adults in the car. Sister, her husband and me.
@MaryM: my sister wants to do this trip. I'm planning on seeing my dad in October when its a little cheaper but she really wants to see him for the holidays which I get, but I'm a cheapskate. I dont mind doing a half way split

@bunnylove08: I think 2 ways is the best choice. It sounds like you could maybe do a more affordable trip at a different time, but it will probably be so nice for your dad to see the grandchildren together. You said the rates look good anyway so just split it. I'm not a fan of nitpicking details like this with family.

I would do 2 ways but if I were your sister, I would probably offer more to offset the need for a larger vehicle.

2 ways, and maybe your sister would pick up more of the gas tab?

@MOMTOLITTLEB: yes it would be nice to have my dad see all the grandkids at once. We're still going in October no matter what so it would be two trips for DD and me.
@LindsayInNY: 5 includes her, her husband and 3 kids.
@Andrea: we would split the gas tab 50/50

@bunnylove08: I'm in the minority here BUT... I look at it this way: if you each got your own car, you and LO would need a little, economy-sized car ($) versus her likely needing an SUV ($$$). So you might be spending more by splitting a large car 50/50 than you would just renting a smaller vehicle on your own. I think it depends how much you're willing to spend and just money in general. If you and your wallet are okay with splitting the cost 50/50 then that'll be easier. But I think you would also be justified splitting it differently so it's balanced across their large family better. (Not to mention the gas someone else brought up... A small vehicle would be cheaper to fill than a large one.)

@LindsayInNY: I'm thinking the same way as you but I feel I'm nickle and diming.

@bunnylove08: How much of a price difference are the vehicles? Someone above mentioned having her cover the cost of an upgrade? I just think of it this way... If you said to her, let's just handle our own vehicles and get two - what would that mean for her, the total cost, etc.? I get not wanting to nickle and dime but you also don't want to spend twice as much just for convenience either.

@LindsayInNY: I would have to talk to my husband and see if he wants to take the trip with us. I think we would maybe save about $50 if we got our own car.
I'm asking the question because I've had money issues with my sister and if I was taking a trip with a friend I wouldn't even bat an eye and just pay for half.

I would let your sister know that you would save X by getting your own car, and ask how she feels about paying for an extra tank of gas or something

If it's actually cheaper for you to get your own car, I would totally do that! Fitting 7 people in one vehicle sounds like a serious PITA. Plus the gas costs for a bigger vehicle... it would just be so much easier having your own car
