I'm going back- just got a job and my daughter is 1, I will be starting when she is 16 months.

I maintained contact with one really, really great contact. he is a professor in my field, and also works with the same population I do. I "guest lectured" twice for him (just came in to speak to a class), and participated in a couple other things. Basically I just asked if he wanted help with anything, and did some really casual stuff for him.

I also did a ton of online trainings for CEUs, which puts me a lot closer to a certification I need.

I have a masters in social work, and work in substance abuse treatment for non-profits.

So, I think there are three main things that are really important, one is maintaining and expanding your network, the other is continuing ed or certification in your new field and the third is maintaining a "work" schedule by either volunteering or something part time.

For the network, now with social media, make sure your online presence is complete and up to date. Search for people in your area that have the position you're looking for and contact them...people love to talk about how they got where they did and with the internet, it's a lot easier than ever. I'd also hook up with some agencies and offer your services, even if they are clerical in nature just to get your foot in the door and make more contacts. Think stuffing envelopes in off hours for an agency you'd like to work for.

I feel as though there is always demand for people that show that they can be adaptable and work hard, so if you show that you're committed to learning the ropes and possibly taking a step back to enter.
