I'm starting to think my LO has reflux. She arches her back a lot when eating, and isn't always very happy when she is laying flat. She doesn't spit up a lot though. I know they can still have reflux and not spit up. If your LO had/has reflux how did you figure it out? Just by taking them to the Dr.? If you got medication, how much did it really help?

I just emailed with my doc today about my LO's reflux. She also does the serious head throw back. She does spit up a lot as well. Doc was pretty anti medicine because LO doesn't get upset when she spits. She just does it and moves on with life. He said meds can help if the baby is extremely uncomfortable and fussy but won't actually stop the spit up.

@MamaMoose: Well my LO doesn't spit up, that's why I'm wondering if it really is reflux....but why else would she throw herself back and get so upset? I wish babies could just say what was wrong

@MamaMoose: My ped said that, that is actually the main attribute of reflux: spit-up without pain.
Spit-up with pain may be GERD which is more serious. In fact, I think the main difference (medically) between spit-up and vomit in babies is whether or not it hurts (vomit bothers baby when coming up). So, your little one may have reflux!@Bao: My son basically got wet hiccups almost every time he ate, he arched his back, fussed and spit-up occasionally. Dr. put him on the lowest dose of Zantac (most mild of reflux meds) and it worked while he was super tiny (less than 9lbs). Now that LO is 12lbs, his dose has more than doubled, but that is also because his symptoms increased too. If he misses a dose, I can expect his entire outfit to be soaked with spit-up within 2 hours. After his dose, he is spit-up free:) So, depending on LO's age: maybe it hasn't developed to its maximum stages yet? Because my LO wasn't all that bad when he was less than 8w old, but now at 10w, he is terrible without his medication.
*I will say that some peds will just tell you to live with it, as long as it isn't causing a colicy baby and as long as baby is gaining weight. But, I insisted on medication and got it. It has made our lives so much happier. No more spending 25 minutes to burp him and then have to change his entire outfit 20 minutes after that! -
@TurtleDoves: thanks for the reply! Hmm..she rarely spits up and doesn't take too long to burp, so maybe it's not reflux? Maybe ill just ask the pedi at her 4 month check up on the 7th.

My son had silent reflux (no spitting up) as a symptom of his milk and soy intolerance. He did the arching back and you could hear him swallow down. He screamed constantly as well. There is a link to a video on another thread. We did Zantac for awhile and then we did Prilosec. For us, since it was a symptom, the meds were worse than dietary changes. If I find the video I will link to it.
Some things to try before meds, holding upright after feedings to encourage the food down, less frequent feedings or more frequent (either may help for us it was less), no juggling of babies stomach
